  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Anyone like to fish?

I use Shimano reels and Berkley Powerbait for smallmouth fishing on the Shenandoah.

I don't fish for bass since there aren't many here but, I would suggest going to a couple local fishing shops and asking them. I've foound that's a good way to find out what to get and where to go.

Depends on the size of the fish you plan to catch and if you plan on using the same setup for different fishing. Most serious fisherman have many different setups. You basically want to use the lightest gear that will allow you to cast the bait you're going to be using and at the distance that's suitable to where you will be fishing.

What size lakes will you be fishing and how big are the fish in those waters? If you want a good all-around outfit go for medium or even light-medium action. For an easy solution I would get a Cabelas outfit in that range. Yo won't be dissapointed.

As for baits, a good all around bait would be Senko worms fished weedless. That will get you bass, pickerel, pan fish, etc..

For largemouth bass, get yourself a stiff 6.5 foot graphite spinning rod. Shimano reels are good, I have the Sanoma. Use 8-10 lb test line.

For lures, buy some plastic worms, grubs and tubes. Rig them "Texas style". Get some spinnerbaits too as well as floating Rapala stickbaits.

Large shiners and crawdads are excellent live baits.

Now you're set.

Fly fishing for Bass is big time fun. Feel free to PM me if you want to try and I can suggest some gear. There is great trout fishing as well in AZ and surrounding states.

Funny, tonight we were talking about getting a few Fishing Herfs together. I haven't fished in a long time but want to get back into it.

In most Arizona lakes, I'd start out using Berkley Power Worms, Carolina or Texas rigged. Slow rolling a crankbait or spinnerbait can also be effective depending on the time of year.

There are so many great rods and reels out there, you can find pretty much anything to fit your budget. Allstar, Fenwick, Abu Garcia, Shimano, and so many more make quality products. Go to a local fishing store (Tempe Marine used to be pretty good) and talk to the guys there.

man I need to fish more. . . My uncle owns some land in west Texas with a few lakes on it. I've always prefered live bait though. Maybe I'll ask for some fishing stuff for my birthday and head out there for a week on the lake. . . anyone down for west Texas in April?

Thanks Moglman be looking for a PM I would like to try fly fishing. I'm picking up a cheap combo $40-$80 and a few plastic worms etc. I talked to a local bass pro and he said he will go with be to buy the ole stand by lures and such. I will keep you posted. Ya I'm thinking (it hurts) cigar, beer, tent and about 100 miles from work sounds good to me. If I'm lucky I won't even catch a fish!

Jason, I just spotted this thread...I happen to be an ex-tournament bass fisherman. I fished tournaments when I lived in Northern Indiana before moving out here to Arizona. The fishing here is really wierd. Winter is the best, but you gotta be really patient with the ultra clear water. Think smaller baits! Light line and smaller baits are the key. I sold my bass boat a couple years ago, so I'm grounded now. I'd start with a lighter weight spinning rod first. Small plastics and smaller spinner baits, smaller crank baits. Top water baits go well just about any time. Keep a nice baitcasting reel also for fishing around any submerged brush piles and trees. What lakes are you interested in fishing? Lots of smallies in Apache, but it's a bitch to get there.

Stop by a Sportsmen's Warehouse for some deals. If you know you want to fish, go buy something and get into it...if you just want to see if it's something you'd enjoy, let me know and I'll loan you something to try.
