I told a couple guys I was going to do this and they requested a how to. So here goes.
I used pretty much the same process used to custom a ronson jet lighter. It was actually my inspiration.
Started with a simple $20 metal alloy ash tray from Famous.
Light sanding with some 360 grit sand paper and a soap and water bath got me ready for primer. 2 coats with some rust-oleum clean metal primer got me here...
I let it dry for about two hours between coats. Then over night before moving on to paint. At my wifes request used some rust-oleum hammered black finish spray paint. 2 coats here and an hour in between coats. After the second coat I added the bands using the tackiness of the paint. You have to go fast because the tackiness faded pretty quick for me at least but it worked.
After a day of drying I moved on to clear coat. I chose a satin finish because I am not a glossy guy. This was the longest time period because I used multiple coats to really seal in the bands. Two coats a day for two days. one in the morning and one at night. I went pretty heavy and it seemed to have no ill effects.
So without much more adui I present my ash tray tribute to the brothers who have been so kind to me so far. If I missed you I appologize but I like this design.
Shout outs to @ZippoGeek , @8ball , @merica87 , @ItsBarbarino , @oldsmokey ,
Thank you again brothers!
