  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I told a couple guys I was going to do this and they requested a how to. So here goes.
I used pretty much the same process used to custom a ronson jet lighter. It was actually my inspiration.
Started with a simple $20 metal alloy ash tray from Famous.

Light sanding with some 360 grit sand paper and a soap and water bath got me ready for primer. 2 coats with some rust-oleum clean metal primer got me here...

I let it dry for about two hours between coats. Then over night before moving on to paint. At my wifes request used some rust-oleum hammered black finish spray paint. 2 coats here and an hour in between coats. After the second coat I added the bands using the tackiness of the paint. You have to go fast because the tackiness faded pretty quick for me at least but it worked.
After a day of drying I moved on to clear coat. I chose a satin finish because I am not a glossy guy. This was the longest time period because I used multiple coats to really seal in the bands. Two coats a day for two days. one in the morning and one at night. I went pretty heavy and it seemed to have no ill effects.
So without much more adui I present my ash tray tribute to the brothers who have been so kind to me so far. If I missed you I appologize but I like this design.

Shout outs to @ZippoGeek , @8ball , @merica87 , @ItsBarbarino , @oldsmokey ,
Thank you again brothers!

Very slick, brother. The most impressive thing to me is that you got a usable Tat Brown band. Those things never seem to come off without tearing somehow.
It was not easy. This one had a little tear to the end that I cut off.
Thanks guys. It was pretty fun.

Well done! Looks like a lot of effort went into it.

I am fortunate to have a pair of very heavy cut lead crystal ashtrays I picked up at an estate sale for $5, the pair. These would cost $100 each new if not more. Unlike you, EO80, I'm not that handy or patient!

I have a nice ceramic ash tray that my wife bought me right after I started down the slope. This was just meant to be able to have something in the back yard that would not shatter if the dogs knock it off the table.
