  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Pre-Light Ceremony

Obviously, like the name of the cigar, its got some age on it. Not only was the cello yellow and crinkly, the white cigar band was showing signs of yellowing.

The wrapper looks so-so upon close scrutiny. There is 1 big vein, its toothy, and has some slight color changes from head to foot. There is a bit of sloppy banding as veggie glue is all over the area near the band. I'm gonna be afraid to take the thing off for fear of tearing the wrapper.

The feel of this cigar is rather nice. It feels full, with just a little give to it.

The cap is on securely, and I give it a clip. No issue at all there.

Pre-light draw is a little loose for my liking, but not the worse I've ever had.

The cigar has a nice earthy aroma to it as well.

First Third
I immediately noticed a coffee bean type flavor. Also noted a little bit of leather, as well as cocoa beans (not sweet chocolate, but like a dark unsweetened chocolate). Also, there was a little spice to the finish of this cigar.

Second Third
The cigar kept its original flavor profiel but I noticed a bit of nuttiness to it. Maybe cashews? The coffee flavor was a bit stronger as well at this point.

Last Third

At this point, I noticed the dreaded metallicy flavor. It was soon followed by ammonia and harshness. I purged to no avail. Finally, I let it go out with about an inch and a half left.

Burn / Construction

A very nice clean burn. Ash was grayish and firm. Fell off about every inch and a half. I didn't have to touch up this cigar at all.

It produced a nice amount of smoke, but it wasn't very dense.

Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed this smoke. Nicely balanced maduro flavors with some changes to keep things interesting. I'd say this is a medium to full bodied smoke. I really liked this cigar and if the price was right would pick up a 5 pack.

I smoke the #50, 7x48, and am in love with them. They are pricey but can be had sometimes for about $6/stick. I have been jonesin' to try the Ashton VSG.

I have generally been disappointed with Ashtons, including the Aged Maduros, and I think they are way over-priced. I'd much rather have one of the Fuente Chateau series sticks. But hey, that's just me. :guitar:

I haven't been disappointed by the Ashton AM but I do agree they are way over-priced compared to the AF chateau maduro.... I recall thinking after smoking a Fuente that it was very similar to the Ashton at half the price...
