Anything worth doing is worth overdoing
OK...so I had one of these a couple months back (the robusto size) and was a bit let down considering the hype.
Here's the link for that "review": http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php?t=47897
Anyway, I planned on re-visiting it in the future and it just so happens, I was gifted another one by a fellow BOTL, so I figured I'd give it another shot.
The one I smoked today was the Clermont...5.5" x 45.
It's a very nice looking cigar, with an AMAZING band. The wrapper is very uniform in color with a couple noticable veins, but nothing to bad. Very firm, with no soft spots. Very pleasing aroma pre-light.
Decided to try out the punch on my new lighter and found it to have a perfect draw.
I torched it up and off I went. I wasn't expecting too much from this stick based off the last one I smoked, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Unlike the last one, which was mostly boring, with a few moments of "Ooooh, here comes something good" which would fade away as quickly as it came, this cigar had very pleasant flavors throughout most of the stick. Those moments I had during the first one actually stuck around this time. Maybe it's the different size, or maybe I just had a bad stick last time, but I actually found myself enjoying this one much more.
Mind you, this still isn't a "wow" stick, but for the price point they are at, it was definitely enjoyable. Spicy, but not a complete pepper bomb, combined with some nutty, creamy, and sweet flavors as well. It puts out ample smoke and the burn was impeccable, not needing a touch up at all. Good firm ash that held on for about an inch before I flicked it off.
As I was getting toward the end of the final third, I started to get a bit of wrapper splitting, but at this point I was pretty much getting to the nub anyway, so...no biggie. It didn't cause me to put it down any earlier than I would have done anyway.
Overall, I'm glad I revisited this one. Box worthy? Not at this point, but I would definitely pick up a 5er to see if they continue in this trend, or if it reverts to my first experience. If the next few are on par with this, I might grab a box for a decent "everyday" type smoke.
