Stopped by my local B&M last night mainly to see if they were gonna carry the new CH Jericho Hill when it comes out. Since they have all the CH releases in including plenty of Las Calaveras which I was surprised by. The guy wasn't sure but I'm sure they will.

On to my concern I pointed out all the JDH stuff what I thought was plume but now I'm not do sure because I saw a lot of other stuff that he was saying had plume including some Kristoffs that looked a little too hairy and spotty. I picked up a couple things but stayed away from that stuff as I am really not so sure it was plume and not mold. If it was indeed plume I have never seen that many different stuff in a B&M have it like that. Didn't get any pics but def concerned

Had a guy at a local B&M give me the same spiel about spotty, hairy "plume" on a JDH. It seems rather common, unfortunately, as there are a ton of threads on here about it. I would assume a lot of these guys don't really want to hear about it, because they usually give the same adamant answer about mold vs plume, etc etc.

I wouldn't be worried, just be sure to inspect your cigars, read here on the million threads regarding plume vs mold, and maybe let them dry out a bit before smoking them.

Y'all have confirmed my suspicion. I may gave to drop by again and give them a friendly suggestion that they need to get that taken care of. Hope they aren't trying to pass off as plume knowing its not.

you would be surprised by how many employees at shops don't know the difference and insist that it's plume

Just to be clear, plume doesnt have any sorta anti mold properties.

meaning moldy plume (or bloomy mold) is a possibility.

I called a few minutes ago to let them know what I saw a different guy from the one who was there last night also assured me it was plume. Guess if I want to get anything from there I just need to be careful. It seemed to mostly confined to those two brands.

Here's a related question - can every cigar potentially develop plume? I know every cigar can develop mold but I am curious if only higher quality cigars can develop plume.

Just like not all wines are suitable for keeping in a cellar for years...

fwiw , another good indicator is to run the length product in question thru the nose, the oils of plume are sweet and cedary. mold is stale and musky...

just be careful not take in a lungful of too many spores though.

I think the answer is yes, but that cigars with more oil in the wrapper are more likely than less oily cigars.

Mold and plume are always a source of having enough knowledge to determine which is which. Even the managers/owners at the B&M's we visit tend to have little or no knowledge of the same....some managers don't want to be targeted with moldy product so they automatically insist that they have product that has plume. Plume is an aging process by which plume develops and to say that it's a regular process on any cigar is not true...it takes a portion of time and in a nearly perfect environment for it to show itself. These days a lot of people tend to think it's a normal part of cigars to go through....it isn't and one is lucky to see plume in their own humidors. I've seen it in mine about 5 times in the last 20 years and while it is exciting to see it doesn't add anything to the taste or profile....it's like seeing a shooting star. Here is an interesting link from some time ago on this very forum about this topic.....http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php/34264-Plume-Bloom-Do-you-have-it
