"A San Diego Zoo wildlife care specialist was bitten Monday by a venomous snake while they were in an area away from the public, an official said.

The worker was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment after the bite from the African bush viper, the official said, stressing that "incidents like this are very rare, and the snake was contained at all times with no risk of an escape."

The condition of the employee was unknown Tuesday.

Since there is no antivenin for the African bush viper, its bite, which can cause bleeding of the internal organs, can be fatal, according to several websites, though the danger is reportedly dependent upon the age of the snake and a variety of other factors."

I like snakes. but...I would be reluctant to hang out with one of these guys.

Oh yikes. We have enough venomous snakes around here to where I just avoid most every one I see. Aside from two or three species (copperhead, cottonmouth, and obviously rattlers), I have ZERO confidence to look at a snake and determine whether it's deadly or not. Saw this guy on a walk the other day and while he's probably an innocent little water snake or something...I nonetheless gave him a wide berth. Lord knows the world doesn't need another entry in the "hold my beer and watch this" book...

OMFG I HATE snakes. I can do bugs and mice, but snakes creep me the fuck out. I was traumatized as a child when my dad had the snake guy at the zoo put a python on me.
After seeing that pic, I wouldn't stick a toe in that water.

Then I'll spare you the discussion about how many gators there are in the waterways around here. Which is nothing compared to our friends next door in lower LA...

The fact that this snake appears to be smiling makes him appear slightly psychotic as well as deadly:giggle:
