Better late than Never *Beer Help*

Ok, I really think I'm missing out on something. Dan the man started a thread "What's being drank this weekend?" Im not much of a beer drinker I keep it pretty simple Corona, Heineken, Coors light. After reading what others are drinking it seems as if I may be suffering from a Palette deficiency? Or maybe depriving myself of some good brews. Can I get a little help with other beers that may be along the taste lines of the ones I've mentioned.

I would pick up some local micro brews and see what you like. You are drinking lighter beers so stay with amber ales and hefeweizens are good. Then you can venture out to porters and stouts. Great darker flavors.

Based off your listed beers that you enjoy it appears your a lager man. If I were you I'd go to a liquor store with lots of beers and ask the clerk for some lager recommendations. As well, a great resource is Beer Advocate on the web. Google some of the beers you like and click on the BA link, it will probably show you a page with a couple of ratings, one from BA and one from the bros. A bit down and on the right side of the page they will give you a listing of the best beers within the style you have selected. I did one for Heineken and this is what I came up with,

YES :yes:.

Put on your jacket, get in your car, and head to the closest brew pub. Ask them for help. :grin: I kid...only a little...I think you'll find any micro brew to have a crap ton more flavor than any of the beers you've listed. I can't give you a specific beer because I'm not really sure what you can get there. However, given what you've listed are your main beers right now I wouldn't immediately jump into anything dark or too strong at the moment. As has been recommended amber ales and hefeweizens would be good choices, though I would also say perhaps a pale ale would be appropriate depending on your tastes.

Do you have a good liquor store nearby that has the "Build your own 6er" shelf? If so, just pick out 6 that you think you might be interested in, and give it a try. It really is fun experimentation!!!!

There are bottle shops in Philly that I know of where you can do build your own sixer. Your other option is to head to a bar with a decent selection. Try one or two beers a trip and then buy what you like at the distributor.

For somewhat local with good stuff you can try Slyfox beers they're out of Phoenixville. Then farther north from you there's Weyerbacher and Bethlehem Brew Works. Further East near me there's Troegs stuff. They're lighter beers like their Sunshine Pilsner is a summer seasonal so you'll have to wait.

Hell you can even go as far as having a Yuengling. Compared to those light beers it has a lot more flavor.

Plenty of places for you to start, even with the ridiculous PA alcohol laws.

I would listen to W.B, the man has an impeccable palate when it comes to both cigars AND beer, hes recommended me many a beer since our first meeting and to say hes never steered me wrong is an understatement.

Local microbrews are a good starting point to get a feel for what you may like to expand upon, but I'd also give unibroue, delirium tremens and DFH a shot

If you like Heineken. I'd advise you to give Grolsh as try.

Also pick up a can of Boddingtons ale. It's some good stuff.

Great site with tons of info I also enjoy reading the Beer Hunter blog. Have fun discovering some microbrews and don't let the price tag discourage you I'm personally a huge fan of Belgium beers like Hoegaarden, Affligem, Chimay, etc but those can get a tad expensive.

I would beg to differ. A lot of those large, what I like to call industrial breweries, use countless enzymes and brewing tricks to make their beer. I can drink a bottle or two and feel like a drank a case. More traditionally produced beer in natural means, especially unfiltered, I can get much more intoxicated from and feel no ill effects.

Plus Bud, Coors, and Heineken are all in the 4%-5% abv range. That means you have to drink twice as much typically compared some craft beers. So you'll be peeing a whole lot which leads to wicked hangovers from dehydration and vitamin deficiencies.


Wink if you go to some of the better known beer bars in Philly like Monk's Cafe or something I bet they have the free circulars like Ale Street News, and I forget the other one. They have all the news and info on the region our local beer originates.

That's the alcohol content (strength), alot of "Craft Beers" are higher in alcohol by volume.

Alot of the one's I have mentioned in that forum are 9.5 or higher....I do like a good kick when I drink a beer or two!

The dehydration and vitamin deficiencies is what gives you a hangover.

The 4-5% abv is about average for most lighter colored beers from the big boys.

Ha...ha...ha you guys make me sound like chicken little! Beers with kick, the big boys??
I'm going to put my palette to the test this weekend, I do know this The darker ales look intimidating as far as taste. They look pretty Bold, but I do want to try new beers and fell the fridge with a little more variety.I really didn't pay too much attention to the abv, it makes sense if you go through a 6'er and you just get a buzz. When 2 brews of a higher content will do you the same justice!

We carry 6 microbrews and I spent months (seriously...someone had to do the research :stretchgr) sampling not only the microbrews but also various smokes to identify great pairings.

When I get into the shop I edit this post with "Rev's Recommended Pairings"...and then the fireworks are sure to begin!

Ok so I took your advice fellas I went to the local 6 pack shack and did A blind grab of 6 brews that I have never tasted or thought about trying. So here is the proof and I guess thanks is in order??? I was tired of seeing all the unique blends you all were throwing back so here's what I got -

Steelhead - extra pal ale
Lowenbrau - original
Magic Hat - not quite pale ale
Flying Fish - Belgian style Dubbel
Samuel Adams - Noble pils
Shipyard - Prelude special ale
