my sister let me have her very beautiful hope chest. It is cedar lined already, but I would be adding a Spanish cedar lining to be safe. In addition I am going to buld some cedar storage boxes for single stick holdoing. then there would be ample room for god around 15 or so full boxes as well. what are your thought on that instead of multiple humis or a coolidor or a wine cooler or that sort of thing. I thought it would be a nice economical idea and look good too.

What are you thoughts?

After closer inspection, there is no cedar lining to it. Just the wood of the chest it's self, sorry about the miss information.

Ahh, cool.

For future reference...yes, even if you were adding spanish cedar.

As long as you can get it to seal it should work fine.

I have a small chest that I'm thinking about converting myself. In order to address the seal issue, my plan is to build a box inside the trunk instead of trying to build the sides / top in and then try to make sure everything fits together.

Let me know if you come up with any tricks / suggestions as you build.

Well as it is now it seals tight and has a lock, so add some cedar, and begin seasoning it. or maybe this winter as a project. it will be cool though. I'll post picks when it's done.

Sounds interesting! Definately post pictures. And be sure that the wood inside is not any type of aromatic wood that will mess with the cigars.

how would you get the vaneer of red cedar out of the box? without taking it apart?
If it's there it is glued or something. how to get it out?

Easy to remove...vodka! Just drink about a half a bottle, then get comfortable with a small chisel and proceed to scrape that shit out of there. A little at a time, and it's gonna take a while. That's the reason for the vodka to settle you down....I speak from experience for this on another project.

If it has any red cedar I personally wouldn't mess with it.
It will kill your cigars. There are many site where you can buy
side table humidors for less than 500. If you need that much storage
you best protect your cigars. If you cant afford the storage then buy
less cigars. I mean storage is as important as the cigars you buy.
Don't get impatient. Always have more storage than you can handle.
That's my motto at least.

MOst hope chests have a pretty solid lining of red cedar. Probably not wrth it. You are trying to reverse what they did to make it moth proof int he first place.
