  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

It's beautiful outside today. Upper 60s with little wind. It didn't start so nice since I was belly aching all night due the finace making me go eat a few batches of Hot wings last night... Can't say no when she goes on her "wing dings" tourettes rant until she gets her way. Now I'm imodiumed up and skipping work. Might as well go golf later so in the mean time while I'm waiting for the drugs to work, I decided to light up "Band A" of Strife's Blind Liga No. 9 Robusto review-contest.

The cigars came in with the bands removed. As you can tell the aged band is quite yellow. The differences in wrapper color is also quite significant. Band A is much darker than Band B.

Review:

Prelight: The wrapper is quite dark. Very oily with fine to medium veins. A gritty texture to the wrapper and it is pack filled with tobacco. I smell sweet mint chocolate on the wrapper and some tea notes on the foot. Straight cut with a Xikar and I am only getting musty tobacco from the cold draw.

1st: It took quite a few puffs to get this one going. After about 10 or so the smoke started to bellow out in huge amounts. Very little pepper but the perfect (med) amount of spice on the finish. The finish is long and quite creamy. The smoke is "in your face" sweet. It coats my mouth and it lingers on my lips. A hint of barnyard in the aftertaste but mostly sweet chocolate and earth. Medium in strengh and the ash is firm. The ash did not drop until the 2nd half.

2nd: Moving into the second half the sweetness reduces drastically. More earth, leather and cocoa notes creep in. Slightly more spice. I enjoyed the transition but preferred the 1st half's flavors. Once the ash dropped off, all the sweetness and chocolate came rushing back. I picked up my smoking pace as the cigar hits its stride. No harshness or distractions as the ash reaches the middle of the cigar.

3rd: The profile stays the same moving toward the 3rd segment. Just an increase in strengh and the flavors become a little more muddled. At this point, I couldn't really tell all the little nuances between the flavors. I also realized I distroyed the mouth end of this cigar. Too much resting in my mouth but that is a good sign. It means I didn't want to put it down.

Thoughts: This was good smoke. A solid 89 in my book. Not very complex but what it did deliver, it delivered in spades. I do wish the pepper was amped up a little in this cigar. The sweetness can be overwhelming at times. Almost like a infused cigar. I think it would be a good smoke for beginners trying to move up to more full bodied/flavored cigars. The strengh and flavors will not offend the majority of NC smokers. Thank you Michael, for the chance to smoke and review this cigar. I look forward to smoking "Band B". Be on the lookout for the second review.

Nice review bro. Been looking forward to these two reviews. If you had to guess , which one would you say this is, fresh(er) or aged?
I would say the fresh one. The aged Ligas I've had are quite a bit more mellow. Also the wrappers are usually much lighter in color on the older ones.

Thanks for the review.
Being a fan of fresh no.9's, I've been curious to "know" how they tend to age and eagerly look forward to the next installment.
Hope a round of the sunshine cures what's ailing ya.

Cheers:ccool:

In my experience, they mellow out a lot, actually, though YMMV. Personally, I think they become a bit too relaxed. Fresh 9's have a bit of sparkle to them that's lost in the transition, IMO. A few years of age, and they begin to lack a certain something, thought they gain a beautiful smoothness.

I have a friend who loves his aged. I prefer mine fresher. That being said, neither of us would turn down either!

Thank you Ninja. That was the impression I was getting putting my ear to the ground, and it makes sense because they are oh so smooth RooT what more can one ask for? I'll smoke one today and save the aging for more appropriate cc's and the like. I can always save 2 or 3 no.9's to see the difference down the road.
Thanks for the review.

Took me awhile but I finally got to band "B" of the Liga No. 9 blind review. The two cigars were similar in a lot of ways so I'll keep this one short and sweet.

Prelight: The Band "B" wrapper was significantly lighter in color than "A". Similar sweet chocolate aroma emitting from the wrapper but no musty taste on the cold draw as compared to "A".

1st: The cigar took to flame right away. No fuss about it at all. While it did required less puffs to get it going, the smoke production was much less than band "A". No pepper on the finish but it did have a nice mild spice. This cigar just shines when I retrohaled. I do not retrohale very often but I found myself doing it every couple puffs or so with this cigar. While the finish was not very complex, the flavors in this cigar just seemed to be married together much better than "A". I was very impressed.

2nd: The cigar is continuing to burn nicely. The ash was tight and the burn was straight. The ash fell off right before the beginning of the 2nd half in a 1 inch chunk. No corrections needed for this cigar. The wow factor did however disappear pretty quickly. The spice faded quite a bit and I was sad that the honeymoon was over. While it did try to come back every now and then during the 2nd half, the flavors mostly remained muddled. It really needed the extra spice or pepper to round out the profile.

3rd: The spice tries to fight back and combination with the sweet mint chocolate puts a smile back on my face. The strengh kicks up quite a bit and my head starts spinning. I long for the 1st half but this was not too far off. The cigar never becomes harsh but a slight bitterness crept in during the final inch.

Final Notes: The reviews were a blast to write. While I still found myself second guessing my palate every now and then, both cigars were not very complex to begin with. I can say that I enjoyed band "B" quite a bit more. Since I put a number to band "A", I'll say band "B" ended up being around a 91 for me. I look forward to knowing which one was aged and which one was fresh. Please let us know Mike :)

My guess:
Band "A" = Fresh
Band "B" = Aged

Thank you for the opportunity to do these reviews Mike. Hopefully my effort was to your approval

You hit it spot on, Band B was the aged Liga #9 and Band A had less than a month off of the truck. Nice job on the reviews! Thanks.
