  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My initial thought was "your favorite pipe tobacco" but as usual I began over thinking it and am now curious if some tobaccos are better for expediting cake buildup..... which leads back to your initial question...

Gut feel..... whatever you enjoy smoking and let nature take its course...

Hey Phil Thanks. By reading some of the threads that some tobacco burns hotter that others. I just don't want to screw up the bowl and over heat it.

That is very true and I am new to this as well, but a lot of that heat is based on packing/smoking methods.

Like I said, noob here so it isn't worth much. Aromatics in my limited experience burn hotter or at least "bite" more often.

Tell you what, I will shut up now and let someone who actually has a clue provide some help to us both. the topic is a good one though.

I dont know that my opinion is of any more value... Ive "broken in" probably a half dozen pipes or so over the years...

Ive never bothered to worry about what tobacco to put in them during the process.. Ive just used whatever I have on hand or happen to be smoking at the time..

I do try to keep my pipes separated in terms of certain pipes get english and virginias.. certain pipes get aeromatics, etc.... so whatever I start them off with is generally what I stick with in them..

but Ive also been known to bend/break that rule occasionally..

For me.. which tobacco I start with hasnt really made any difference that I can tell.. they all end up "broken in" and have a nice cake built up within about 10-12 bowls...

Phil: noob here so it isn't worth much. Your reply was taken as advice. At lease you have the confidence to reply with your opinion and for that I Thank You.

I usually use my favorite aromatic that way I build up a sweet cake. I kinda like the sweetness even in my English.

Sent from my Galaxy S3 while getting a blumpkin!

This is a good question...I've never gave it a thought. After watching my late grandfather just go to town on a new pipe I know what he would say. "Just fill it up and smoke it!".

Well I have just started breaking in my new Peterson and it was recommended to me to use a burley to start with. IDK why but I bought some Burley. I have read to start with like a third of a bowl for the first few then to 2/3s then full. This at least made sense to me because you want to start a good cake in the bottom of the bowl. Me being a new pipe smoker I dont always get to the bottom of the bowl while smoking a bowl full.

As a side note; I started smoking the pipe for those times when I wanted a smoke but not much time to light a cigar. I DIDNT KNOW PIPE SMOKING WOULD BE SO HARD! But I am enjoying it and my TAD is a tad into overdrive right at the moment.

Whatever tobacco you use, just make sure you finish the bowl! The cake build up will "end" at the lowest level smoked to.......smoke to the bottom of the bowl every time. You can let it sit and go back to smoking, just make sure you smoke to the bottom of the bowl to get a good cake build up. I have left mine for 2 or 3 days and gone back to finish them later. If you do this, make sure you use a pipe cleaner to soak up the "dottle" before letting the pipe cool down. After the cake builds up, you can smoke partial bowls but may have to scrape some of the cake buildup at the top of the bowl. Try to keep the cake the same thickness from top to bottom.
