  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Building a Humi

Well I have decided to build my own humi, but am kind of stumped on what kind I want to build. Since my wife is objecting to the idea of a walk-in at the present time, I decided to down size slightly. I have been tossing around the idea of finding an older buffet and refinishing it and converting it to a large humidor. I have also been thinking about building from scratch, just your average everyday box or trunk type humi that is custom to my own needs. I figured if I did this it would save me the space of having 5 humidors all filled around my house. Any input or ideas from anyone would be great and I would appreciate it. Thanks everyone.

We have a couple oof master craftsmen here that I'm sure can offer more help than most of us.

Wade? Sascha? Arlin?

And from what I hear, don't do this to save money, do it for personal gratification.

I converted the bottom of a bedroom cabinet into a temp/humi controled storage that holds about 500-700 sticks, but it was costly. If I had it to do over again, I'd have gone with a couple Vino Temps with cedar drawers. Don't get me wrong, it looks good and works great, but it was lots of work. I think I spent upwards of $400 bucks just on the spanish cedar.

I definately don't plan on doing this to save any money. I want it for my own personal gratification. I want something that is custom to my needs and want to be able to do it right. I have spent numerous hours on the net trying to find a humi that would be right for me and keep coming up blank. What I am trying to do is cut down on the 5 humidors I already have.

I can tell you how to do fish tanks. Can you have it page you if the RH drops below a certain range like they do in custom reef tanks.
If I understood, does this means ye can make the humi warn ye if the RH has gone too low? If so, please let me know, I'd like to give it a try.

While I have never done it with RH but with other aspect such as temp and other pH values for reef tanks. If I understood how a humidor works I would def be able to help you out. Maybe in the near future when I get my humidor knowledge up to par I can chime in.

Fish and live coral can die or be damaged in a matter of hours if the temp spikes. However even if your RH dives to 50% for a day, you can be comfortable that your smokes are easily saved. I would like an alarm on my Humidor so I know if someone opens it with out my knowledge.

Good point. Especially given the fact that I check the humis RH about once a week (or whenever I take a cigar out). Yet I wanted to give it a try mostly for the thrill of it; it's not because I have problems regulating humidity.

That would be easy enough. Especially if you already have a house alarm. It's just an add-on component to have it call you with either a distress signal or a pre-recorded message. Basically, you'd make the humi a zone of it's own, and if breached, you get the call.

If you don't want it with your house alarm, you could do a stand-alone system to do the same thing, just protecting your humi is all.

Unless you are a cabinet builder and have the tools and know how, or at least an amateur carpenter, building a nice humi is a pain in the ass. Trust me on this one. If you are, great, go for it,but if you are like me and consider yourself pretty handy, and have quite a few tools, but have never attempted furniture quality woodworking, I recommend against it.

Talk to Ron and get a custom built Avallo, or search out Bob and get a custom Aristocrat.

I am definitely not a carpenter but am very handy and have the tools. This is why I am leaning towards finding a nice, possibly antique, dining room buffet to refinish and convert. This would be more my skill level. I am also 100% sure that this is going to take me a little while to do, but I will keep you posted with pictures on how it is going. This weekend I am going to take a trip to some flea markets and such and see if I can't pick up something that is decently priced and nice, so I can start restoring it. I am sure I will have lots of questions as I start getting into it. If anyone has any ideas on what humidifier I should use, I definitely want to go with an electronic one, let me know. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks again.

Absolutely! Building your own is NOT a way to save cash, it's done because you have a love for woodworking and love the challenge. Mine cost me more than what I could have bought a Stabell for.

That second one for $475 is almost exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for finding that for me, I may have to go take a look at that.
