  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Smoked July 2010

(Skip the next paragraph if you want to get straight to the review)

This cigar comes to us from Don Pepin Garcia and is manufactured in the Tatuaje factory in little Havana Miami. This is the first Cabaiguan I have smoked.

Anyway, it is a well made cigar with a traditional Cuban pig tail style triple cap and features a natural wrapper from Ecuador along with Nicaraguan filler and binder. I was definitely impressed by the construction and eager to light it up.

Enough about the cigar and on to the review.

Pre-light
As I mentioned this cigar was very well made with no soft spots. The natural wrapper had some slight veins but was smooth to the touch and at first glance looked quite mild.

The pre light draw was a little tight(definitely manageable) and had strong tobacco notes along with some subtle earth and spice.

First Third
Strong leather and tobacco notes along dominated the first few draws. It also had a long creamy finish with some pepper. Definitely normal for a Pepin cigar. As I smoked on, the finish shortened, became somewhat dry and it got more and more interesting. Sweet fruit and walnuts were noted.

Second Third
The second third was extremely pleasant with strong notes of almonds, leather and some cinnamon. The finish remained short and dry, but the flavor was outstanding.

Last Third
As usual, Pepin doesn’t disappoint and the final third was even more complex. It was bright with citrus, dark chocolate, and spice. At one point I noticed some sweet floral notes that reminded me of honey. I nubbed this one as far as I could take it…and PAID for it.

Closing
After that review I am sure you are thinking you should run out and buy a box of these…well, this cigar should come with a warning label. Although the flavors were tremendous, you will earn it. By the second third I started to feel overwhelmed by the strength and was glad I was sitting down. I have smoked many cigars and this was the first one where it was difficult to finish. Afterward I felt pretty ill, and because of that I would only slightly recommend you try this cigar.

That being said, I would say this cigar was the closest cigar I have ever had in flavor to the Cohiba Siglo VI. That is saying a lot!!

However, if you want those flavors I would recommend you get a hold of the Cohiba and skip the Cabaiguan. The Cohiba Siglo VI is a MUCH more pleasant experience as it won’t leave you ill.

Smoke on!(with caution) :)
Please email me with any questions.

Nice review! I love all the Cabaiguan lines ... and just to clairfy, the one pictured is the Cabaiguan Gupaos line (sungrown vs natural shade wrapper).

The "feeling ill" thing you experienced has nothing to do with this specific cigar, but just the good ol' Vitamin N. EAT SOMPIN' before you hit a strong smoke next time! Don't feel bad, though, I've done it several times myself. Just 2 nights ago, in fact, I found myself saying "Whoa, I better quit now or I'll regret it." That was at the end of an even stronger smoke, though.

Thanks for the review... aside from having great flavor I am always amazed at the beautiful construction on the Cabaiguans. That is a nearly flawless triple cap! Top notch all the way.

Great review... I love Cabaiguan's...

Also good are Pete Johnson's El Triunfador & the newly re-blended La Riqueza lines... One of my favorites, although mixed filler, is the Sumatran Ambos Mundos (red label, the cream label which is a Ecuadorian Shade wrapper tastes too green to me)... the AM is a nice "driving" cigar, great for when you want to smoke in traffic...

that makes more sense. When I read the review and thought of my own experience with the Cabaiguan naturals, there were a few things that didn't ring true to me(like strong, and pepper, and dark chocolate . . . ). Now that I look back and think Guapos, I think this review is right on - good work.

Sometimes cigars just hit you different, and it has a lot to do with what's in your stomach, but also may have something to do with smoking area, hydration levels, phase of the moon, etc.

Nice idea on the poll too.

Nice review! I have smoked one Cab and have another in the humi - might give it a shot this w/e.

The only time I get an ill feeling is if I let a cigar go out and inadvertently take a few deep puffs of dank air...

Say what??? Where did you hear that? Is that a typo and did you mean the re-blended El Triunfador? From what I know, there has been no change to the La Riqueza line besides the packaging/band.

You're right ryan, i was watching a video interview that Pete did today
and he said that the LaRiqueza's have remained the same. Only difference
if any is he may be using PA Broadleaf, but the blend is the same...

And "Shawn"... I guess the mod's deleted your comment but that Siglo
6 Comparison of smoothness to strength was downright Hilarious!!!:rolling:

Thanks all! I appreciate your comments and I see that many if you aren't afraid of trying the cigar! That's cool, but you can't say I didn't warn you! :)
