  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Cain Daytona #4

Size: 5 x 43
Country: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan (100% Jalapa Valley)
Single Price: $4.70
Total smoke time: 1:15

I was given a couple of these the other day from Skinsfanlarry from Empire Cigars (Bastard!!) while up in Raleigh and I thought I would do a review that had a few more pics than some of the others. While I'm not a huge Cain fan there has been a good bit of buzz on these Daytonas and I was really looking forward to trying one for myself. I paired this one up with a Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing.

Pre-Light

The first thing I noticed about the cigar was the bright orange foot band with the contrasting gold trim. It looks really good against the contrast of the almost graham cracker colored wrapper. The construction is flawless. It's firmly packed with no soft spots and is wrapped perfectly. The size is one of my favorites and that made it all the more appealing. The initial aroma from the foot was overwhelmingly that of hay and dried tobacco. The cap clipped easily without damage and the draw was exactly to my preference. Not loose but not tight either. The same Hay and tobacco can be tasted. The cigar lit easily and the smoke output right off was crazy. Very thick and creamy.

First Third

There is no hint of pepper at all in this that I can taste which is a bit surprising since it is a Cain and from Nicaragua. The pre-light flavors of hay and tobacco have been replaced by more of floral mix and some strong coffee tones. The ash on the cigar is light gray, almost white, and the burn is razor sharp. This is an incredibly smooth cigar. I would have never even thought of it being in the Cain line had someone given it to me unbanded.

Middle Third

Into the middle of the cigar and I can really taste some heavy leather flavors along with the earlier floral and coffee. The contrast of the almost white ash against the wrapper shade was very appearant. The thickness and richness of the smoke is great and not something I have found in too many cigars. It's almost heavy enough to chew on.

The better looking of the 2 of us with a Viaje Holiday Blend:)

Final Third

The flavor profile stayed pretty consistant through the final part of the cigar right up until the last 1" or so and then I got some strong waves of burnt wood and dark chocolate. The burn and draw were perfect until the end as well. I cant get over what a smooth cigar this was.

Final Thoughts

I know there are a bunch of you out there like me that would look at the Daytona and say no thanks I'm not a Cain fan, but I'm telling you that you would be missing out. The fact that this cigar was available in the #4 size was too me an added bonus. At less than $5 with a total smoke time of right at 1:15 this is an extremely good deal. Not only did I enjoy the cigar enough to smoke 2 of them back to back, but it's one I will surely get a box of.

Thanks for reading!!

Great review, great pics!

I bought one today to try and was very disappointed. The draw was extremely tight and there simply wasn't enough flavor for me. My friend bought one in a different size and thought the same. It's a shame, since I'm such a big of the the other Cains.

That's the same size I smoked Marty and I liked it a lot. I think that smokers of the normal Cain like like SailorAg might be disappointed because it is no where near as strong as the standard Cains. In fact the only regular Cain I like to smoke is the Cain F corona. The rest are too much for me especially when I'm at work and want to taste the three other cigars I have planned for the day.

By the way if you had a tight draw it's most likely that the humidity was too high where you bought it. When I buy smokes out of a walk in I take them home and let them dry out a bit since my humi is 65%. Many walkins and cabinets I've had the pleasure of dealing with either keep the humidity right at 70 or a touch more. Just think about all the air exchange all day long with people going in and out and opening and closing cabinet doors.

Thanks for the review, for the record though I'd rather be smoking your wife's.

My local B&M had a Cain Event for the Daytona line last week and I picked up a 5-er of the different sizes. Think I will give the #4 a try first.
