  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Caldwell The King is Dead
Size: Broken Sword (5x40)
Wrapper: Dominican Negrito
Binder: Dominican Corojo
Filler: Dominican Corojo Ligero and Negrito Viso
Price: $6.50 per cigar. (Box breakdown)
This cigar was obtained as payment in a lottery payout.

Appearance: The wrapper is dark brown, with some slight black mottling. There are some noticably visible veins that keep it from having a smooth appearance, but there is also a nice sheen to the leaf when held in the light.

Pre-Light
Aroma: There is a heavy aroma of soil, backed by some tobacco and hay. The cigar has a nice barnyard type aroma that comes in at a medium level.
Cold Draw: The draw seems a bit tight. Some slightly sweet hay and the earth tones from the aroma play in the cold draw, though they are mellowed a bit in the taste.

1st
The initial light gives some of the sweet hay from the aroma, and a nice creamy mouth feel. The hay darkens to a mossy, earthy tone backed by some mild edging medium pepper. There is some dark cedar playing in the mix as well, with just a mild hint of honey to blend everything together.

2nd
The mixture here is interesting.. The flavors are still vegetal and earthy in nature, but are blended with a creamy, almost buttery background. There are still hints of cedar, but it has lightened up from its first appearance. Still some mild spice in the aftertaste as well, and it picks up slightly stronger on the retrohale.

3rd
The flavors aren't transitioning wildly, but the hints of sweetness and creamy cedar are keeping the earthy tones from becoming one sided. It seems to go back and forth from earthy soil to hay and mossy tones as the primary flavors. The cigar started to burn a little hot near the end, causing some bitterness.

Impressions
As I am not a big Dominican smoker, my palate may not be completely adjusted to everything the KID has to offer. However, it does have a nice profile that is blended by creamy cedar and some hints of sweet honey and pepper. It is one of the more enjoyable Dominicans that I have smoked, and I'd be interested in trying it in another size. I'd also like to venture into a few more of the products Caldwell offers to compare.

Thanks for posting this. I've only had 1 Caldwell cigar, but I've been very interested in learning more about them based on customers coming into the shop and asking for them every week.
