Im feeling lazy and cheap. I have a small 72 boveda pack. Can't I just toss it into a ziplock w the hygeometer and see how close it gets to 72?

BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Plus or minus 1% I believe where the calibration kits are less variation, I use 65's and its close enough
75 is what they send you when you spend the three bucks for a "calibration" packet, but i used a 72 that i bought and it worked just fine. IMO it doesn't matter as long as it is an exact measurement which the bored packs are. i did calibration on gauges and things like that in the Navy, its all the same. have a standard that is exact have the test instrument (your gauge) do the test and as long as it matches you are calibrated.

Yep. Ultimate calibration would include a much lower (30rh) and a much higher (90rh) but the devices we use don't have much distortion anyway. Its an indication. At set level, its precise. Farther than that, its less precise. If you could calibrate at the rh you prefer, with a known source of that rh, it would even be better.

Some of the cheaper hygrometers will only calibrate at 75%, not having the option of adjusting up and down at any level, rather just always resetting the reading to 75% when you pust the button.

Short answer is yes, that'll work just fine.
MY theory is that it's actually better to calibrate at the RH you're planning on using. I reckon the instruments we're using in our humidor aren't that precise anyway so the closer we calibrate to where we are going to use them the closer they'll be under actual usage.

I've used all types of Boveda from 65 to 78 to check what my hygrometer is reading. If it's a point or two off I don't even worry about. They smoke just fine so I don't even care what the number is. We aren't flying rockets here, just smoking Cigars.
So WTF am I supposed to do with this space suit I won on cbid?

75 percent is used because it's easy to do with salt and water. But most hygrometers seem to be off a bit when you start getting away from what they are calibrated at (when I take them out in the open air they can vary wildly), so it makes sense to check the hygrometer against whatever humidity you actually plan to use.
