I don't know about the stupidest and least free...I think New York and New Jersey are right on par with them....And, as chagrined as I am to admit it, Texas is following suit with the smoking bans...Several cities (Austin and Houston being the two largest) have banned smoking in all building in the city limits, and within 50 of the entrance/exit of any public building..

Frickin' Cali. NJ is close for sure, not sure if it's quite as bad. It took a heck of a lot longer for NJ to fall to the smoking ban than it did Cali (first state to try it I think). Heck, even FL, which I think is a pretty good state as far as these things go, banned smoking in public buildings before NJ did.

The first article is a local issue that has to do with San Diego only. So no big state bogeyman there.
The second article has to do with a proposition that has yet to be voted on, by the people I might add. Which is a lot more "free" than letting politicians decide all the laws.

Hey I'm not looking to offend any Californians (apparantly I failed, gosh darn) but if I did...grow thicker skin.

Look dude:
Ontario has passed a provincewide ban on smoking in workplaces and all indoor public areas, including designated smoking rooms. The ban effectively prohibits smoking in all indoor areas except people's homes or temporary accommodations such as hotel rooms. It also bans smoking in work vehicles, and prominent displays of tobacco products in stores. It came into effect in June 2006.

There is momentum on the anti-smoking side that has never been seen before. The very fact that prop 86 is on the ballot signifies a sea change. 100% tax on all existing floor stock? I am not saying that they sky is falling, but even you can recognize that this is more than a boogeyman.

SD's ban is just as idiotic as the ban on foie gras in Chicago (those poor Geese!, whats next veal?).

Yes, I did do a bad thing. I generalized! Shame on me for saying California and not spend the time to write down every city-state that has anti smoking ordinances therein.

I am not from Tennessee. Try not to be elitist next time.

You make a statement like that, and you can't take it when somebody questions it?

Instead of targeting the laws themselves, you targeted the people.

I dunno what the province of Ontario has to do with this, since that's in another country.
SD's tobacco law is more about litter than tobacco so it's not analgous to the Chicago foie gras ban.
You can say SD passed a bad law, but lumping together 36 million people based on a couple of laws is just plain ignorant.

If bad tobacco laws are passed in your state, then it's your responsibility to vote out the politicians that pass them. California doesn't pass laws for Tennessee, the citizens of Tennessee do that. So if you're worried about these laws coming here, then let your representatives know, they work for you.

I wasn't being elitist, I thought it was ironic that you called CA the "stupidest state", but you didn't read the articles to see that the SD ban was not state wide and the prop hasn't even been voted on.

CA's ONE OF the "stupidest states" because of their recent political history, not because of the specific things Larry posted about on this thread. "Stupidest and least free" may be a bit overboard, but it certainly isn't all that far from the mark...specifically "least free". Certain states within the Union are moving more and more Left to the point where they have a definite "socialist" bent. Cali happens to be one of those states. I happen to believe that wishing for or voting for things that make our government more of a Nanny State (local or federal) is stupid. That does not mean I think that every person in Cali, and least of all you, are stupid.

Certainly the post is a generalization. But said generalization couldn't have been made if SD was in the minority or if there weren't recent precedence for what they are doing within California as a whole.

Your note about reading comprehension was a borderline flame, and I think you know it. I'm used to more of an intelligent response from you than sarcastic insults.

You are posting on a cigar board. Surprise, surprise that people who love this hobby are upset about pending laws in ANY part of this country that harm our hobby, and the general direction of things in that political arena.

My concern for our state is that the cities seem to be following each other. Calabasas, which is just up the hill from us has basically outlawed smoking. Now Dublin, CA is looking to add second hand smoke to the list of public nusiances. No ticket but it makes it easier in civil court to win. This is scary stuff. The proposition is unfortuneate. Maybe it will pass and maybe not. If it does, it will kill a lot of smoke shops.

I live in NY and as you know am not allowed to smoke any where public. But personally I would never smoke in a public place, just because I feel that it is thing of being respectful to the people that are around. Yes I love to light up a great cigar but that is me and I can understand where other people who don’t like it would get mad that they have to deal with the smell and smoke. It like when you get that really religious person (what ever that religion might be) and they start to try and push there religion on you. Plus people can some times become asshole here if they don’t like something so it is just way easier not to deal with them altogether
