  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

About me: I've been smoking cigars for just under a month. Up to today, experience has been JC Newman brands - Brickhouse, Centenario, La Unica, and a Brand X Rigolleto Dominican Light. I still consider myself a n00b smoker.

CAO Brazilia Gol! 5x56
Wrapper: Brazil Maduro
Binder & Filler: Nicaragua
Obtained from: Cigars International (CAO Dream Team sampler)
Time in humidor: 2 days

Aroma (unlit): Very dark, licoriche aroma. Aroma has a bite to it. Aroma is significantly different from any other cigar I've smelled, although I haven't smelled many. Overall pleasing aroma.

I had a little trouble getting a good light. I attribute this to the fact that it did not have sufficient rest time. The reason I smoked this one so soon is I have a friend here in Afghanistan going home tomorrow, so we shared the two Brazilias that came in my sampler.

Taste: Immediately a very nice decidedly chocolate flavor, but not super sweet. More of a baking cocoa than a Hershey bar. Kinda woody. Pepper zing was barely even noticeable. Later started getting a woody note.

For me, seemed fairly clean, nice smoke. Finish wasn't very long. It was hard to tell how much smoke there was as we smoked these at night with no light.

Strength: I had this after a meal, but after I was done, I had absolutely no dizziness. So very nice medium-full body cigar, but without the nicotine high. Mild-Average strength.

Construction: The ash held on for at least 1.5 to 2 inches. Probably the longest ash I've seen of the few cigars I've smoked.

Burn: During the first half, had to do several touch-ups. However, I attribute this to the cigar not having enough rest time (2 days). I had to put more effort into lighting this one than any other cigar, so it was probably a bit too moist. The 2nd half had a much better, practically flawless burn.

Overall, this cigar exceeded expectations, and was a very positive introduction to the world of Maduros. I definitely wouldn't mind coming back to this one once I get some more cigars under my belt. I'd probably go so far as to say this was my favorite yet, better than the Brickhouse Robusto or Cuesta Rey Centenario Pyramid #9.

I'm anxious to try the next cigars, but I will be giving them a couple weeks of rest time. My next cigar will be a Cuesta Rey Centenario Riviera.

Nice review NOOB!! :)

The CAO Brazilia is a pretty nice intro to Maduros I think. They call it full-bodied, but it's really more like medium-full. Some spice, rich flavor, etc. For the price (assuming online deal and NOT retail), they're pretty good, imvho. Glad you enjoyed it!

The CAO MX2 is another to try if you liked that one :ccowboy:

Very nice review, your pallete is good. The burn problems could also have just been due to the cigar. I have construction issues now and then with CAO not staying lit or plugging on me. Well hope you enjoy the rest of your journey

I've found that CAOs (espeically the maduros) benefit from a lower rH or from dry-boxing for a couple days prior to smoking. This is especially true with the MX2 ... dry-boxed for a few days it's a really great stick.

Yeah, the Brazilia is definitely one of the better CAO cigars (for now at least...), and has a pretty straight forward-what you expect maduro profile. Not a fan of this size at all though, just way too thick. I actually love the little Cariocas that come in a tin. Pretty good for a 20 minute smoke.

Those Tins are good. I bought a case of those a while ago. A very nice quick smoke.

I've been wanting to try one of these, but everytime at a B&M, I cant bring my self to drop the $12 or so bucks on it.
Wow, that's a lot. If you're not opposed to online, the bundle I got was $30 for ten sticks with 2 ea: Brazilia, Italia, Mx2, Moby Black and VR Moby. But go figure, their sampler is now "sold out". Famous Smoke has a CAO sampler which includes two Brazilias, and they sell a 5 pack for a very reasonable price.

Are there any other B&Ms in your area, or is it fairly common for B&Ms to mark up a single 200%? Retail is $136/box of 20, which amounts to $6.80/stick. $12/stick seems excessive unless they are really rare and in high demand...

I have two of those in my humidor right now, as part of the sampler! Maybe after a couple weeks I'll try one of those next. The Mx2 has a nice strong dark chocolate aroma. Makes me think of the 92% cocoa specialty chocolate bars.

The Italia and Black Bengal both have an earthy barnyard manure aroma to them, but not in a bad way. Those will be interesting to light up.

Then there is the VR Moby which has a nice cedar aroma to it. I'm expecting that will taste more like the cigars I've been having.
