Thursday I had some work to do outdoors and I might as well review a cigar while I was at it . This day I ended up choosing the CAO Brazilia that JP8 sent me for my birthday...thanks man . The Brazilias are one of my favorites, but I've always had problems with the larger cigars and have mostly stayed with the Piranha size (4.5 x 46). This particular cigar looks to be the Ipanema which measures in at 7 x 50. This cigar contains filler and binder from Nicaragua and is draped in a gorgeous, oily Mata Fina wrapper from Brazil. The wrapper is one of the darker ones I've seen, has a few veins present (some quite big) and carries the pungent aroma one can only associate with a madruo . The band is colorful and really pops in contrast to the wrapper. Inspecting the foot and overall feel of the cigar it appears well packed.
The cap clipped quickly and cleanly. The draw was great and carried flavors of rich tobacco with a hint of spice.
The cigar toasted easily with an initial pepper blast that quickly died away to a slight spice. I can only describe the main flavor to be that of a meaty, rich maduro...almost a beef jerky :dunno:. There is a nuttiness present on the finish as well.
The burn is good at the start, though not razor sharp. The ash starts as a medium gray, but is flaky and falls easily.
As I mentioned earlier I have had nothing but bad luck with the larger sizes in terms of burn issues. Unfortunately this still holds true. I had to relight this cigar several times, the burn as always wanting to go astray and the ash was crumbly. That said, it did produce a massive amount of smoke.
I finally reached a point where I just could not seem to keep it lit. So I cut a little ways above the ash and lit it up again so see if things would go better.
There developed a small tear in the wrapper just below the cap, it didn't effect the smoking in any way though.
I finally couldn't keep it up any more what with the burn issues and all. I really hated to let it go, but sometimes you just have to. I really enjoy the Brazilias, but I guess I'll just have to stick to the smaller sized Piranha.
