Alright, as promised, here is a review of a CAO Mx2 to compare against the Mx3 I reviewed yesterday. And to top it off....this is post 100 for me!
Althought I have a Mx2 in the humidor, it is a toro, and I wanted to review a robusto since that is what I have for the Mx3 and the Camacho Triple Maduro (review to come tonight or tomorrow). I went down to The Burning Leaf (Wicker Park) today to grab one of these sticks.
The robusto comes as a 5x52, and has a dark brown wrapper with a nice oily shine. There are a number noticeable veins in the wrapper, but not too huge. The head is perfectly rounded, with a well formed cap. The overall feel of the cigar is nice and firm, with no soft areas at all.
After a straight cut with my Palio, the pre-light smoke offered flavors of coffee, leather and cedar notes. The stick lit very easily and started off with a nice even burn. The flavor from the first third offered the same coffee and leather, with hints of cocoa, cedar and a little spice. I also noticed some hints of raisin with this stick too, and not just when breathing out the nose. The burn was nice and even, and the ash was very tight.
The second third of the stick toned down on the coffer and leather a bit. The cedar and spice (kind of peppery) started to come out a little more, and again notes of cocoa and a little raisin showed through. If the burn got a little off line, it always caught back up to a straight line. Quite impressive.
The final third of the stick had a drier flavor as it reached toward a nub. Leather and cedar dominated, with spice on the back end of the draw. There was also a flavor of dried leaves in there too. I didn't get it quite to the nub, as the dryness made it harder to go much further.
Perhaps it would be better to let this one stay in humidity a little more, but it didn't seem to cause a problem through the bulk of the smoke. I think this is a pretty good stick overall, and not bad for the $5 tag. The smoke time was about 90 minutes.
