What kind of file and when I do file it down which way do I file it to get it sharp edge?

They get filed flat. here are some examples of how there used.

And it doesn't have to be sharp really.

I'm betting you already have at least half a dozen capable cap cutters in your garage if you look. Watch at about the seventh minute mark of this:
and then go walk around the garage for five minutes.
