I'm going to start off by saying that I friggin' loved this cigar so much, I considered eating the nub.
This was part of my newbie bomb from shuckins...
Let me say that I had no preconceived notions going into this stick. I've only seen the Carlos Torano bands at my local smoke shop and I'll remind everyone that I'm a relative novice to this cigar smoking thing.
This is a really handsome cigar with a semi-dark, oily wrapper.
The pre-light draw was pleasant and had some woody flavors. Upon the light, I was blasted with some overpowering spice. After a few puffs, this died down to this wonderful cinnamon sensation... not really the full cinnamon flavor. It wasn't like I was smoking Big Red or anything. But the sensation on the tip of my tongue was the same.
After about an inch and a half, the ash fell off and I started getting some awesome raisin and melon flavor. This continued in varying degrees of strength throughout the stick. Hints of coffee and cocoa stayed in the background. Honestly, the flavors were very complex and a bit hard for me to single out. I loved all the spice sensations.
I smoked a Casa Magna a week ago wanting to explore all the hype surrounding the CA designation as cigar of the year. This had some of the same spices I tasted in that smoke, which I thought was very good. But this blows that cigar out of the water in terms of consistency and overall flavor.
Anyway, I really want to say thank you for having this amazing place. I found you by reading brooks's blog. Brooks is a fellow photographer and I respect his opinion on all things smoky and aesthetic. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the generosity and camaraderie I've found in just several days on this forum. Knowing that I'm a newbie, not one person has been condescending or mean.
I'm so glad I picked this cigar to smoke first from my "bomb."
I'll be buying a box of these for a regular smoke. It went really well with the bottle of Tempranillo I was drinking and I imagine it would go well with any full-bodied red wine or your favorite color of Johnny Walker.
My score: 91
