First of all, just want to say I don't know much about this cigar at all. I am not even sure what the proper name for this cigar is. I was told by the person gifting it to me it was just a Casa Fuente with a Sumatra wrapper. This cigar was picked up at Casa Fuente by my co-worker who was at the Big Smoke last week. I was unable to find out any information about this cigar when searching the interwebs, but I would imagine it carries a similar $20ish price tag like the other CF's.
The first thing I noticed about this cigar is the use of a yellow foot band instead of the normal orange one used on the Cameroon and Sungrown versions. Appearance of the cigar was a dull looking wrapper with minimal veins. In clipping the cap, I really had to bear down on my Xikar to get it cut, but didn't see any stems that may have caused this, just densely packed. Pre-light draw was extremely tight with a hint of a hay like spice.
For some reason this cigar took a little bit longer to light with my soft flame, so I ended up using a buddies torch to get the one "stubborn" side lit. Starting out, the draw was awful and required 3 consecutive puffs to get a small amount of smoke. Flavor of the smoke produced was nothing memorable either, with a light spice and a very "dry" taste to it.
About an inch in to it, the cigar is holding a nice light gray ash to it, but the draw is just awful. I grabbed the shop draw poker and proceed to run it through a dozen or so times in several different spots. All of which did absolutely nothing to improve the shitty draw.
There was definitely a different taste to the Sumatra version and it didn't have that "sweetness" that the regular Casa Fuente has from the Cameroon wrapper. I think the "sweetness" is what I like most about the regular Casa Fuente.
As I smoke through the halfway point of the Sumatra I really have to say I enjoyed absolutely nothing about the cigar. Slightly pepper taste, with a lingering hay like spice. I poked it a second time and rolled the cigar almost to the breaking point in an attempt to "loosen" it up a bit.
I really felt bad because the fine gentleman that gave me the cigar was sitting with me in the lounge as I smoked through the cigar. I didn't want to seem ungrateful and complain when he gifted me a stick with a big price tag. So, not wanting to seem rude I decided to go ahead and leave the lounge. The first thing I did when I rounded the corner of the shop was toss that miserable, non-drawing, flavorless, dry, overpriced hunk-o-shit.
Final verdict... Wouldn't buy again unless it came with a lap dance from one of the Casa Fuente girls.
