This afternoon I sat out on my usual spot to enjoy a cigar. It's been a fight to get my son to take his nap all week and by the time I got him down I didn't have a whole lot of free time so I reached for one of the Petit Coronas I've been buying up for just such occasions. Today it happens to be the Casa Magna Colorado. Measuring 4 3/4 x 42, it features a blend of Nicaraguan tobacco and features an oily, chocolate wrapper with a reddish hue. It has a slightly lumpy appearance to it, but everything seems tight and it's packed well. There are some smaller veins present as well. The band is nicely designed and over all, while not a work of art, this is an appealing offering.
There is a rich, slightly salty, tobacco aroma coming from the cigar. Clipped the cap to reveal a perfect draw and a rich tobacco flavor with some pepper and fleeting hints of black cherry.
Torched it up with a Ronson JetLite and it took right off. Immediately I was assaulted with an explosion of pepper and leather. So much so that I could barely tolerate expelling the smoke through my nose. Strong pepper and leather are always flavors that make me very thirsty while smoking and I went through several glasses of water while doing this review.
The pepper and leather hung on through about the first third when the pepper died down and was only noticeable through the retro-hale. The leather seemed more of an afterthought behind an slightly sweet oatmeal and wood profile. The burn started out wavy, but after the ash dropped at the first half inch (it would continue to do so through the duration of the smoke) it burned straight with only minor touch ups toward the end. Ash was a light gray color.
The oatmeal and wood flavors have been consistent through the second third and the cigar has been churning out massive plumes of thick white smoke.
As I approached the last third the flavors seemed to mute a bit, but were still good. I also began to pick up some spice (something akin to a cinnamon, but different) and fleeting glimpses of that black cherry again.
I have to be honest, I wasn't sure I'd like this cigar very much while I was working my way through that first third. The pepper and leather were almost overwhelming and you could feel the nicotine in the back of your throat. Not that I don't like that combination. Sometimes a DPG Blue is just magnificent and it's a very peppery/leathery smoke. But, the DPG Blue also has other flavors that combine well with the pepper and leather from the get go. At any rate once it died down some, the Casa Magna became a very nice smoke indeed. The oatmeal/wood combination turned out very nice and the spice/ hints of cherry at the end kept me puffing away happily. Would I buy more? Hell yeah! My local B&M doesn't carry this size, but have the others so I may give the Robusto a whirl soon.
