Only 5000 10 count boxes made in two different sizes of this Nicaraguan puro. For this review I will be smoking the smaller of the two called the Optimus. I have really been looking forward to this release so it’s time to fire it up.
Size: 5 ¾ x 52 box press
Price: $8.95 for this size
Wrapper is sun grown from Jalapa and as mentioned earlier it is a Nicaraguan puro
Pre-light:
The cigar itself has some of the most flawless construction I’ve ever seen. I will say that for some strange reason the band is making me crave a McDonald’s cheeseburger, but other than that it’s beautiful. I clipped the pig tail cap and removed the second band from the foot. The cold draw tastes like plum and raisin. I continued the cold draw for several minutes as it was really enjoyable.
First third:
There is a small amount of spice. Flavors consist of oak and another flavor that I just can’t put my finger on. I guess it could be best described as a dry moss. There is a slight hint of the plum that I had in the cold draw as well. So far the burn is razor sharp with the perfect amount of smoke. The ash went a little over an inch and fell into my lap ruining another pair of shorts.
Second Third:
The spice seems to be ramped up a bit. The oak has faded along with the plum. The dry moss is still there along with a bittersweet chocolate. Flavor is in the med-full range closer to the med. The smoke has coated my palette like a dry red wine does. So far nothing negative can be said as I am enjoying this cigar.
Last Third:
Not much has changed. Flavors are spot on and remain consistent from the second third.
Final notes:
The perfect appearance did not disappoint. The burn was razor sharp and this cigar smoked beautifully. Do not be fooled by the ash looking solid as it did fall off in one inch chunks. Thrilled that I took the chance and picked up a box of these. Hopefully I can set some aside to revisit them down the road. Great cigar and completely different than the other Casa Magna lines. Not the most complex smoke, but that’s OK considering the flavors that come out of it. Final smoke time was just over an hour and a half.
