  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I'm a Canadian so we have lots of CC's in our shops. I always assumed that our shops didn't carry the Nicaraguan and Dominican made cigars that use the CC names so that there would't be any confusion but I just read the those cigars are made exclusively for the US market. That makes sense but I wonder about the blends. There are dozens of good cigars made by these companies using the CC brand names so it would seem to me that they would use the same cigar with a different name for export to the rest of the world. Does anyone know if this is done?

La Gloria Cubana is marketed as El Credito in Europe.
Good question though, will be interesting to learn.
Seems to take the marketability out of the question, would you buy a cigar with a name you have never seen on the chance it was a Monte or Bolivar?
Trademarks will be a big problem to solve prior to CCs being sold in the US.

" So your question could be phrased "How does the US government define a Cuban cigar" ."

I would hazard to guess : "Made in Cuba." :cat:

If it was made in Cuba it's Cuban. If it was made anywhere else it's not Cuban. The ones made for the u.s. market with big brand cc names. I'm guessing they figure it would tarnish there reputation if you had Cohiba red dot sitting next to a siglo. They only make a different blend to tap into the U.S economy. Outside the u.s they have no reason to sell anything but the real Cuba tobacco that has brought them the fame.

It's be like Pepsi having to make a different tasting Pepsi in order to sell it outside the u.s. Then that inferior product and sitting next to the real Pepsi. Why split your customer base if you don't have too.

Honestly many CC Brands, and Name are also today being market by US Distributors/Manufactures.

So if the CC Embargo is lifted to the point that CC's flow into the USA again the first hurdle I see is.

EXAMPLE. General Cigar own right to sell the name Cohiba in the USA.

So if Cohiba CC's wants into the USA as Cohiba, General will say sorry we own that Name in the "USA".

It call their TradeMark, and they General will either fight, or say Cohiba CC's must be distributed by General as a Co-Venture with General.

So brand that are in the USA are sent to other part of the World under different name, because of CC Companies own the name say in Spain, the U.K., and the list of countries is long.

Well as I said General owns the name Cohiba in the USA. They are not going to stand by, and not protect what they have money invest in.

It about Dollar & Cents, not being good guy.

Honestly many of the names of CC's made in Cuba, are also the name of Brands owned by companies making Cigar in the Dominican Repulbic, Nicaragua, etc, being sold in the American market

Speculators bought domain names when the net started, many clean up selling those name when the net took off.

Drugs Dot Com, etc sold for big bucks. Speculator cleaned up, they gambles, and won.

Seems like alot extra work to put the same blend under a different name unless your going to completely scrap the name of the original blend.

I think Cuba is maxed out in production, but I think lifting of the embargo, will open opportunities for US Dollars to be invested in Cuba.

Those dollars would equal more technology. But also Cuba is trading today with the World minus the USA.

If the embargo was life 100%, it would benefit the USA, as we could sell Cubans our products.

Guys, you're getting distracted and confused, his question is, surely they sell monte white (for example) in other countries, but under what name?
Yeah this ^^^^^
Carry on with the discussion of trademarks and embargoes but that is not really what I want to know. I just figured that if General Cigar (for example) is making a Cohiba Red Dot and can ONLY sell it in the USA because the rest of the world still respects Cuban trademarks (not a political statement, just a fact), then I would think General Cigar would use the same cigar under a different name so as to tap into the rest of the world with that blend. Maybe they don't but I would.

I see what your saying. I'm not sure if they do either and I'm not sure how to find. I don't think it's something they would make public information.

Seems like this has been long running legal dispute, but as of right now GC has ownership of the name in the US. Smart move by General Cigar to register the name in 1978....

"
In response to General Cigar's use of the Cohiba name, Cubatabaco, the government-run company in charge of cigars, and half-owner of Habanos SA along with Altadis SA, launched a long-running legal campaign to have General Cigar's trademark revoked.

These legal fisticuffs were resolved on June 19, 2006, when the U. S. Supreme Court denied Cubatabaco's petition. As a result, the February 2005 decision of the U. S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals (Docket #04-2527), which confirmed General Cigar Company’s exclusive ownership of the Cohiba trademark in the United States, is final.[10] The General Cigar-made Cohiba cigars now have a disclaimer on boxes that they are not affiliated in any way with the Cuban brand.

However, the United States government, in an amicus curiae brief filed in the Supreme Court, acknowledged that Cubatabaco could request U.S. government permission for judicial protection of the brand from the Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which administers the U.S. embargo. Cubatabaco has stated that they intend to pursue this course of action."

We recently had a chain of Cigar shops who have apprently affailated with Altis another distributor, apprently they are gambling on some easing of the CC embargo.

Apprently their motivation is, they will be the first to get CC's, honestly this is just businessmen doing what they do best. Gamble hoping to cash in if the horse they bet on, invest in finish first in the race.
