I couldn't agree more. Not only does it give the new smokers a chance to get the tobacconist / humidor experience which is becoming more and more the lost art, these days. It lso will allow the tobacconist to show you a variety of bargan smokes that they will have on hand.
For bargan sticks njstone covered a couple of my favs: LA VIEJA HABANA, and INDIAN TABAC (particularly, the corojo tepee). I like to start a new smoker off with as true a medium bodied smoke as I can find. I perfer Rocky Patel's NORDING, and get few bad reviews. If they think it "smooth" I can try them on some heavier blends, "a little strong", take it down a notch to a cameroon or connecticut if need be. It's all part of starting to build a palate, a process that a good tobacconist will be toughtfully and actively involved in.
I had my first cigar in middle school and my first permium when I was 17. I was hooked from there. I fully understand how tight that budget can be when trying to buy good tobacco. We are in a college town, and deal with these cats who are just like I was 10 years ago in our humidor every day, and that's why part of what we do at our club is try to provide that learning environment that we didn't have and hope to save a lot of new smokers a lot of money in the long run on sticks they should have skipped in the first place.
Good luck to you and your mates. Smoking 'gars is best done with friends, and best done with friends who know and love tobacco as much as you do.

sometimes you have to carry two kinds of smokes. what you like and what your buds will smoke. as nice as it would be to educate them, if they only smoke around you and only smoke your sticks, then there are lots of passable bundles out there that they will be fine with, and still be decent. you get to smoke what you want since you're buying. i do that with friends that i know like to smoke with me, but are happy with a $4 stick and couldn't tell the difference if i gave them one for three times the price. heck, at least let them pick up the beer tab once in a while to make it even!

Oliva, Oliva, Oliva. Anything. Nub, Habano, Connecticut, Cameroon (G), Flor de Oliva, V, S. (what did I leave out?...)
They are consistent, inexpensive and super-tasty. Oliva is great about allowing their leaf to age before rolling it, something I think that General and Altadis tend to skimp on for their less expensive brands.
