The cigar I'm reviewing today is an original release J21, my last one!
(No I didn't smoke it in my car, just took the picture on my way home.)
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Ligero Corojo
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Size: Robusto 5x50
Price: $10-$11 a stick.
Libation/Pairing: Bottled Water
Construction & Appearance: This stick features a very reddish hued wrapper, w/ some veins showing, but minimal. Very slight oil sheen to the wrapper. This stick in particular has a very tight pack and roll, has a lot of heft in the hand. The cap is constructed just about perfectly, very rounded off.
Pre-light Draw: Fairly tight, but very manageable and worry free. Nice sweet cedar and natural tobacco flavors off the bat.
Ash and Burn: This stick required very minimal touch ups at times, but I wasn't surprised due to the ligero wrapper. Other than than, it was dead on, razor sharp at points. Ash was a very dense and held on for over an inch and a half before I rolled it off. Had a very light grey, almost white ash, no signs of any ammonia. Little flaking, but not much, mostly kept solid.
Overall Flavor: Very balanced and smooth, w/ a very clean spice that washes over the palette. This cigar made my mouth water, literally! It hit the sweet spot for sure, and I had to spit out the excess saliva almost after every draw, which I tend to enjoy over a parched mouth. Semi-sweet, very cubanesque flavors of cedar and leather. The flavor was there for a few seconds and was gone. Flavors seem to build up and gain more sweetness as it was smoked down. Extremely clean smoke (almost creamy at times, or shall I say refreshing?)and left no bitterness in my mouth even at the nub. Age has done great things for this stick.
Final Thought: Smooth, strong, clean spice, and very flavorful. If you can still find 'em, buy them. I was lucky enough to get five or six a few months back, sadly this was the last one. They all tasted very similar to one of another and each burned for about an hour and a half, very densely packed sticks. One of my favorite tat's, personally.
