  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hi guys,

Have been smoking cigars for a little less than a year. I have tried quite a few makers and blends. So far my favorites are:
(1) Padron 1964 Maduro, size: Diplomatico
(2) E.P. Carrillo La Historia, size: EIII
(3) Avo Syncro Fogata, size: Toro

I was wondering if a BOTL with similar taste/palate could make some recommendations for both high-end as well as daily smokers I might enjoy.

All the best,
Gus

I wish share what little wisdom I have with you.

1. What you taste is what your individual palate tastes.

2. Buy 5 packs, and exterminat. Why 5, because most Cigar are some what inconsistant from stick to stick.

3. Keep track of what taste good to you, what you hate, what is only so so. Write down your likes & dislikes.

4. Many great Cigars fly under the radar of the Cigar Magazine, as they get no reviews. Simply because they do not buy $25,000.00 Full page glossy ads.

5. Cigars are like Wine to me, I drink what taste good to me, not because the Wine is expensive.

6. Smoke what you personally like, not what the clerk at the B & M says is wonderful. I have smoked a few $15.00 + per sticks that did not knock my socks off. There were not bad Cigars, they just were not to my personal liking.

I pretty much agree with the sentiments expressed by SurfnSafari. With both wine and cigars, I buy and drink/smoke what I like. I have expanded my horizons by telling my B&M what I enjoy smoking and asking them to recommend a similar smoke telling them the price range. Most of their recommendation end up in my rotation. It has worked for me so far.

find out country of origin for the tobacco in them, maybe there is a clue there.
you seem to like med to full flavor, at medium strength.
try Nicaraguan stuff, good odds for something nice.....
Carillo has a knack of getting great flavors from his tobacco, explore his other items....(he does use a bit of Dominican tobacco)
step down a couple ring sizes for comparison, you can get more concentration from a smaller stick.....

Thank you so much for the responses so far, guys!
I am looking for some pointers on how to focus my search a bit more so that I can buy 5 packs that seem to fit certain criteria (which is what I am trying to figure out). My B&M has great selection, but the guys there tend to push certain brands.
Thanks Nacho Daddy for some specific guidance!
All the best,
Gus

Ok, based on what you mentioned, I'll take a stab at it. For nicer cigars, try some more in the AVO line, and also any of the many higher end Padrons, along with other EP Carillo, as already mentioned. That's probably a safe bet. For daily smokes, look for some Ramon Bueso Genesis the Project (GtP), and GtP Habano. Also, Drew Estate Nica Rustica, and CAO Brazilla might be something to look for.
But, all the above advice is sound, and you should listen to them.

Honestly I am told that the Estaban Carrera Hellcat, is a poor man version of the Padron 64 you list as a favorite.

Honeslty people who are know as "Cigar Expert Tasters", are like those who review Wine, Beer, or Hard Liquor. Their plates are for the most part not exposed to stuff people like me eat daily. I like Hot & Spicy Food, it effects my palate I am sure, but the love of "KIcking Up Flavor" is worth what some call pain.

My most recent funny expierence with "Hot" was in Scottsdale, AZ at a store that sold salsa. Ask the B & M clerk what is the hottest stuff you have. He point to a ghost pepper sause, I said can I sample, he said yes if you sign this waver. Signed it, I did the sample licking to spoon clean, kid asks how was it, I replied it got my attention, but was not a big deal. Kids said most people run for water, I laughed and smiled it was not a big deal.

My palate is not your palate, your is not mine.

Smoke what you like the taste of, and enjoy. Honestly if I was asked to become a professional cigar reviewer, my personal palate would interpret many cigar as similar to old cardboard rolled up, minimal flavor profile.

A lot of this has to do with the quantity of tastebuds one has per square inch in your mouth. Someone that cannot handle any heat would probably be able to pick up the subtleties of many cigars as they have more tastebuds. In the same breath they could not stand anything hot or sour as those flavors would be really overpowering. People, like yourself, who really love spicy food have fewer tastebuds and can eat Spicey foods but lose the ability to taste subtle flavors. Most people are some place in the middle.

You might also really like the romacraft lines, Intemperance and aquitaine among others.
I second ApeSmokes recommendation of Bueso Genesis project and Habano.
Most CAO are pretty good as well.
