Cuvee Rouge Robusto
This is another cigar made by the folks at Cusano Cigars. It is a nice 5 x 50, Dominican puro with a sun grown wrapper. It is a rated by the manufacturers as a medium to full cigar. Smoked this one tonight at work with an Arizona Sweet Tea. These come in a box of 24, costing approximately $6 each.
Pre-light inspection shows this is a beautifully made cigar with a reddish wrapper. Nice oily sheen with minor veins. Nice cap on the cigar, but I noticed a small tear on the foot. It had a firm feel and was very well made. Pre-light scents of pepper and cedar were very noticeable.
After cutting this cigar with my Palio, tastes of medium black pepper, cedar, dark roasted coffee and cayenne pepper were present. I had heard this cigar had a history of giving off ammonia, but I did not detect any. After toasting the cigar with my Dupont lighter, lots of blue grey smoke emitted from this cigar.
Pepper was one of the great flavors in this cigar, which remained from start to finish. Not only the nice black pepper, but also a spicy pepper, much like cayenne pepper. The cedar and dark roasted coffee was also present, as well as a slight hint of cinnamon to give the cigar a slight sweet taste. The tear in the foot continued for about the first inch, creating a mushroom shaped ash, which remained tight on the cigar. The ash was a nice light grey, flakey ash. After ashing the cigar, the tear was no longer an issue and this cigar burned very well.
The peppery flavor, large amount of smoke and the good construction made this a good cigar. It seemed that my example had some age on it, which may have been the reason no ammonia taste or smell was present.
As I hit the final third, the cigar needed to be relit for no reason. This caused me some concern, as the draw was wonderful. I relit the cigar without any problem and the huge amount of smoke continued. No idea why the cigar went out. No other construction issue appeared. I was able to smoke this one to about an inch to inch and a half. Had to put it down though as the pepper overpowered at this point. I also noticed a strong nicotine twang develop.
Overall, I enjoyed the cigar. It had a full, strong peppery flavor, which did not overpower me until the end. The blend of pepper, cayenne, cedar, dark roasted coffee and slight hint of cinnamon was nice. Although the tear was present during the initial light, it did not cause any issues or detract from the flavor of this cigar. I would definitely smoke one of these again.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope it helps. Sorry for the terrible picture, but I only had my cell camera to shoot it with.
