On June 20, 2013, 150 retailers and bloggers descended on Manhattan for the unveiling of a Davidoff product 10 years in the making. I was lucky enough to join the small group of people in New York City to be among the first to see, taste, and experience Davidoff Nicaragua. a new cigar that will be available later this year. What we got to see was not only exciting and new, but within the world of Davidoff, groundbreaking and what many thought impossible. Henke Kelner, master blender of Davidoff cigars, was on hand to speak about the project, and his words echoed that same sentiment. Henke said for many years he believed it impossible for Nicaraguan tobacco’s to meet the strict standards that Davidoff holds its products to; impossible to create a product that was at the same time familiar to the Davidoff connoisseur while also being a new exploration for their palate. But the impossible was proven possible on this night! Davidoff Nicaragua was born a thought 10 years ago, but on June 20, 2013, the exploration, adventure and discovery of Davidoff Nicaragua became a reality. Coming in 3 sizes, today we will be enjoying the robusto size, a 5×50 Nicaraguan puro. The other 2 vitolas that will be available at launch are a short corona measuring 3.75×46 and a toro coming in at 5.5×54. And while this cigar is completed using all Nicaraguan tobacco’s, it is still rolled in the Davidoff factory in Dominican Republic.

Binder: Habano Jalapa
Filler: Esteli Viso, Condegas Ligero, Ometepe Viso and 1/4 Esteli Ligero
Strength: Mild-Medium

Appearance: The aged Rosado wrapper on the Davidoff Nicaraguan is luscious in it’s light cocoa color with a slight reddish hue. It is smooth to the touch with very little veining and no tooth to speak of. There is a slight oiliness to the wrapper but very little shine from the oils. The first thing most people will notice is the band, styled exactly like the standard Davidoff White Label, just in black and silver. While this project was in development, at least late in the process, it was code named Davidoff Black, most likely due to the choice of color for the band. There is also a secondary band beneath the main band, orange in color with black trim and the word Nicaragua in black and the logo for the project, 3 multi-layered triangles that represent the mountains of this cigars homeland.

Pre-Light Aroma: The foot of the Davidoff Nicaragua carries a light earthy scent reminiscent of a tea leaf, just a subtle amount of sweetness backed up by the mountainous aroma. The wrapper shares a similar characteristic, though in a much more subtle fashion, only lightly showing it’s tea leaf sweetness. The dry-draw is easy with just a hint of resistance, as I prefer, with just some faint earthiness showing up on the tongue and lips. With the pre-light festivities out of the way, let’s get this beauty lit and enjoy some “Time Beautifully Filled”.
Davidoff Nicaragua
The first puff on the Davidoff Nicaragua is surprising in a very good way; distinctly Davidoff while at the same time unlike any experience Davidoff has created before. What I mean by that is the cigar is as smooth as silk, both in balance and feel of the smoke, while at the same time providing none of the flavor Davidoff is most associated with. It is a richer, deeper flavor profile than Davidoff is known for, truly highlighting what makes Nicaraguan tobacco so special. There is a slight spice at the back of the palate with heavier notes of oak and leather that are present on both the tongue and in the nose. The burn line stays fairly straight through the initial third and the ash holds solid past an inch before I tap it off. The smoke output is quite impressive with each puff delivering plenty of the silky smooth smoke to the mouth and even presenting a decent amount while resting. I would call this mild-medium at the start with some hints as to an increased strength as we move through the stick.

The 2nd third of the Davidoff Nicaragua brings out a sweeter profile in the cigar. Soft notes of cocoa and a nice bitter espresso come to the palate, with the cocoa sweetness really highlighted through the nose. The pepper and earthy notes have subsided to make way for the sweetness. The strength has kicked up just a bit, settling into the light side of medium by this point. The contrast of flavors between the first and second third are very distinct and the change happens rather quickly, surprising the palate with the abrupt change of pace. The burn line has remained steady without needing a touch up and the ash, while becoming slightly flaky, continues to hold for an inch or more before needing to be tapped off.

As we come to the end of the Davidoff Nicaragua, a sweet creaminess enters the fold, building on the delectable flavors of cocoa and espresso. The finish leaves you wanting more, the smooth, creamy quality of the smoke balanced so well with the medium body. From start to finish this may be one of, if not the, smoothest cigar I have ever smoked. The flavors are delightful and provide a sweet and complex experience from the first puff. And as I said in the intro, the Davidoff Nicaragua is absolutely Davidoff while at the same time not. The duality of this cigar may be it’s most shining point, providing the quality and experience you expect from Davidoff while at the same time allowing you to explore the flavor profile unlike anything bearing the familiar oval label. Time Beautifully Filled indeed!
