  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

E.P. Carrillo Short Run 2011 Canonazos

Size: 5-7/8x52

Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua, Dominican Republic

About:
Ernesto Perez Carrillo’s Short Run releases are smaller limited release batches that he intends to release throughout the year. The 2010 Short Run was a precursor to his Core Line – it was released in 3 sizes with 1500 boxes of each size produced.

The 2011 Short Run release also consists of three sizes, also with 1,500 boxes of each size produced.

Pre-light:
Te wrapper was a beautiful medium-brown color, and was very smooth for the most part. There was one small vein running from the band to the foot, and the cigar was well-packed with no hard or soft spots. There was a small crack in the wrapper, but that was due to a drop on my part.

AROMA: The prelight aroma had a stong cedar component accompanied by an interesting musky-spicy character. The aroma at the foot with a bit more concentrated with chili spice and pencil shaving aromas.

TASTE: Prelight taste had a pleasant light grassiness with a very interesting slight hint of mint that gave the prelight flavor an almost refreshing quality.

1/3:
The cigar started right off with a strong toasted nut character. Even more interesting, there is a distinct sweetness to the cigar, almost as if it had been dipped in simple syrup before I lit it. Though very forward, this sweetness was in no way overpowering, nor did it taste like it had been artificially infused. This sweetness actually balanced quite nicely with a very slight cayenne-like bite at the back of my palate.

2/3:
The nuttiness from the first third evolves into what I would characterize as a subtle green-woodiness. At the same time, the cayenne bite became more subdued in its attack and became fuller throughout the whole profile. The finish was medium with pleasant spicy and meaty notes.

3/3:
In the final third, the spiciness continues to become fuller – the attack was still relatively gentle, but the sensation of its overall fullness increased. I also started to notice some of the meaty characteristics from the finish start to emerge as well. The sweetness came back in the final third, but it was very subtle. The intensification of flavors continued, and I was able to enjoy this cigar until I burned my fingers.

Overall:
Once again, EP Carrillo has come out with a cigar that is quite enjoyable. I think that the strength in this cigar (as well as his other blends) is in the finesse. There was a nice evolution of flavors, with a lot of different things going on as the cigar progressed.

I love these sticks. I am trying really hard not to dive into the box every chance I get, but it's extremely hard.
Thanks for the review !

I absolutely love these sticks as well. I too have an issue keeping my hands off of these things... I've already exhausted my supply.

One of my go to smokes. Think I only have 3 left. Can't wait for the 2011 Dark rituals that should be out this month along with releases from other 3 favorite companies.

Nice review, I REALLY want to try these -- have a 5er on order, but it's back-ordered, grr!

I like the 2010 a lot, sounds like these are very different, but that's not a bad thing. It's interesting that you say the 2010 was a precursor to the Core Line. Though there are certain similarities, I find those two sticks to be pretty different.
