I recently gave a good friend a couple of cigars off his longtime wishlist. Instead of thanking me and graciously accepting his gift he decided to bomb the living shit out of me. In the package were 16 cigars I've either never previously enjoyed or enjoy emmensly, yet rarely have the opportunity.
After much conversation, we have resolved that I will smoke & review every single cigar he sent. Saving is for collectors. I'm a cigar smoker. I'll post the reviews here for the cigars that aren't commonly reviewed. Oh, these will likely be more tasting notes and observations than formal reviews.
Early 2000s Oliva O Bold - Red Cloth Band
This Fer is still strong! Very bold tobacco taste and an extremely unique Cinnamon candy spice. I like it but think its more strength than I prefer. Its one quick burner. In 5 minutes it has almost burned 1/2". This cigar has TONS of aged tobacco flavor. Not vintage tobacco but more akin to the smell when you walk into an escaparate (sp?) where cigars are aging. It's definitely strong and produces loads of smoke. Still has a spicy bite on the upper palate that kind of tastes like burning wood smells. Unfortunately its a fast burner. Total smoking time will probably be exactly an hour. I'd smoke more of these for a great change of pace from my usual suave, more flavor than strength, preferred smoke. Very unique experience for me.
It tastes like its got some age on it but has total legs to go for another 2 decades. 10 more years would really round it out & start bringing on that prototypical vintage tobacco flavor, while not losing too much strength. I imagine that 6 or 7 years will be the peak of its flavor strength (in a perceived spicy character, that is). I say 20 years left for improvement because after the spicy character subsides, I suspect that there are LOADS of subtle deep, dark sweet flavors that would emerge (perhaps molasses or stewed fruit like an RyJ. Every once in a while it hints at those tastes). I love smoking cigars like this because I can imagine their destiny; as effeminate as that sounds.
I rate it at probably 7.5/10 on a real smoking scale.
Wish it would have burned slower and been a little further on in its aging process. All in all a very good cigar. Slightly flaky ash that is salt & pepper in color. The wrapper looks very similar to a Tat Frank that I had sitting in my singles drawer right next to it.
