The El Baton brand began life in the early 1900's as a nickel cigar made with Cuban tobacco and produced by JC Newman. With the growth of machine made cigars in the 1920's it died off. In 2008 was reintroduced by JC Newman as a Nicaraguan puro. There are 3 cigars in the line a Robusto (5 x 54), a Torpedo (6 3/4 x 54) and the Double Toro (6 x 60). The wrapper is a chocolate color with no real appreciable veining. The seams were tight and the cap neatly applied. There was a nice barnyard and slight chocolate aroma to the cigar. The cigar was firmly packed and overall was a massive log of a cigar.
Punched it. Draw was spot on. I got flavors of coffee and a slight chocolate.
Torched it up and away we go...
There was an initial slightly peppery flavor that lasted for a few puffs, but quickly dissipated. This was replaced by a slightly nutty coffee flavor and a bit of spice through the nose.
The ash was holding nice and strong with a white color to it. The cigar produced a LOT of smoke. It came billowing out of the cigar and several times I had to wave my hand around to clear it...really could have used a slight breeze on the porch.
No change in the flavors as we go into the second third.
At somewhere around the half way point the cigar developed a dry cedar flavor. It had a slight harshness to it that wasn't intolerable, but certainly wasn't something that made you want to smoke more of these.
Overall the cigar wasn't bad until the dry cedar kicked in. After that it wasn't very enjoyable. For what it's worth CA rated it a 91 . Given that I only paid $4 and some change for it I'm not that disappointed, but probably won't try it again. Given the large ring gauges in this line a lot of people are going to avoid it anyway, but there are some who like the jawbreaker sizes and to them I'd say don't expect too much.
