  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I've been away from the site for a while as I recently got married and that's kept me fairly busy. I got married down in Florida and while I was there I stopped in at El Titan de Bronze and picked up a few cigars to try out. If you are ever in the Miami area I would definitely recommend checking the place out, it is very cool and unique. They have a small retail area up front where they sell their own cigar lines and they had about 7-10 rollers working on different stuff while I was there, including a few guys rolling some Warped La Colmena sticks.
I just wanted to go to bed tonight, but as I started falling asleep a loud ass truck horn went screeching by outside my open bedroom window and made me wake up. No chance of getting back to bed right away so I decided to light something up instead and try to relax. Anyway, upon a recommendation from @problemsolverjc and @bigbill72 I picked up the My Way in a size they call a coronita. Here are some prelight shots:

As you can see it is a very neat looking cigar with a pigtail reminiscent of a slightly smaller LP Flying Pig. The size is about a 5.75 x 46 so basically a CG. It also sports a covered foot and the wrapper looks great. The seams aren't necessarily invisible but they aren't particularly noticeable either and there are not any unsightly veins. There is a slight oily sheen on the wrapper and it has an very pleasing but somewhat light smell of tobacco (yeah no shit) and hay aroma.
I head out to the porch with my main homie for life, Kato, who is in maximum chill mode.

Time to light up, unfortunately my main Xikar lighter has shit the bed and my other lighter was confiscated by TSA, so I'm rolling old school with matches. But not just any matches, I went out and bought the 11" Duraflame long stick matches cuz I don't want to fuck this lighting process up. The matches work well but make the cigar very hot upon my first couple of puffs. Slightly unpleasant, but this is user error and not the cigars' fault so no points will be deducted for my rookie move. The first third starts off with a woody flavor being the predominant flavor. In the background there are flavors of oats, nuts, earthiness and a plain toast flavor and they mix in and out throughout the first third. Unfortunately, the cigar has some issues keeping a nice burn line and while going out isn't a concern at this point, some parts of the cigar aren't wanting to stay lit. Theres a slight breeze but nothing that I think should hinder the cigar this much, kind of annoying but by no means a deal breaker. A butane lighter would be great right about now to touch this up, matches are a little more difficult to deal with. The cigar has a medium body at this point.
The ash hangs on for the first third reaching about 2 inches in length before I ash it and get into the heart of the second third. After ashing, the burn is being ridiculous again and requires another match touch up to help it along, but the flavor remains untainted as of yet. The cigar transitions slightly with the plain toast flavor coming to the forefront but with plenty of wood and nuts in the background. A slight floral taste comes in every once and a while with small amounts of creaminess that seem to disappear as soon as I notice them. More burn issues with small parts of the cigar not wanting to light but a bit of puffing manages to correct it without me having to grab a match. After smoking the majority of this third the ash falls off and the cigar once again has issues with the burn. Another correction is required to get it right again, but the flavor thankfully remains unhindered. I took a picture somewhere in the middle of the cigar:

At the beginning of the final third there is a major and noticeable change in the profile. The transition is dramatic with the cigar producing a very barbecued meaty flavor. It reminds me a bit of something from the Tat meat locker series or a TAA light, if that makes sense. The flavor is strong but is somehow less in your face then the meat flavors from one of those Tats and is, IMO, more pleasant. Black pepper is the main background flavor with an earthiness returning and some wood flavors, but the toast and nuttiness are gone. After another ash, the cigar burn line once again gets crappy and I put it down with about an inch left. The cigar finishes as a medium-full.

Appearance and prelight aroma: 20/20
Construction: 20/20
Burning properties: 12/20
Flavor: 35/40
Overall: 86/100
Final thoughts: I had already mentioned the presentation, but it merits repeating that it is quite awesome. I would've appreciated slighly more aroma coming from the cigar but I'm not going to deduct points from something so cool and made with obvious care and passion for that kind of nit picky shit. The major downfall of this cigar was the burn issues, but I was extremely happy that they never seemed to negatively impact the flavor of the cigar, and with a torch lighter I think it would've been even less of an issue. Having to relight the cigar with matches proved to be a pain in the ass and made the issues I had seem magnified because of this. The flavors were solid and pleasing and the outside of the aformentioned burn issues, the overall construction was solid. While I was smoking this cigar I thought "this is right around an 87" and it worked out pretty close to that. Since this review is based on smoking just the one stick I do wonder if I just got a poorly burning example on this particular go round. This is certainly a cigar that has 90-92 potential in it with a few less touch ups. I will revisit this in future and at the very least I will provide a quick update about the burning properties and quick review and score.

Great review! I didn't have any burn issues with my previous experiences with this cigar. That said, I've only smoked it inside and used a torch. Two things that can certainly impact the way a cigar burns.

Glad you picked a few up!

Smoke a Warped El Oso (also made at El Titan) and tell me that's not the same wrapper leaf used on this cigar!

I cannot use the matches because I always end up messing up the flavors.
