Today was a typical Monday...busy and it sucked. So all I wanted to do when I got home was grab a cigar and hit the deck. Today's choice of smoke was the El Triunfador lancero. Now I'm not generally a fan of lanceros so I was interested to see how this one would smoke. The El Triunfador measures in at 7.5 x 38 and sports a chocolate brown, slightly toothy, Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. There are a few veins present lacing their way throughout the cigar. The cigar is packed well, no soft spots felt. The aroma coming off the cigar is exquisite and contains notes of chocolate, earth, and tobacco.
The pig tail cap cut quickly and cleanly, but the draw was tight. I didn't really want to cut more than I had so we'll see if it opens up. The flavors from the cold draw were slightly sweet chocolatey tobacco with cinnamon. This is a first time I've clearly gotten that cinnamon flavor and it left me really looking forward to putting a flame to this sucker. It toasted easily and the aroma from the cigar as I lit it was quite nice.
Initial flavors are that of slightly sweet tobacco and vanilla with a slight spice tingle on the tongue. There is also a nutty flavor that is more of a roasted nut through the nose. The burn is razor sharp. The draw hasn't opened up like I'd hoped it would and the smoke output seems to be suffering some.
The ash is a light gray and holds tight, falling in 3/4" to 1" clumps. The draw was still tight so I decided to take a little more off in the hopes it would open up.
The draw didn't really improve any so it seems I'm stuck with it. By taking slow and long puffs I was able to increase smoke production and thereby increase the flavor output which made me happier . By the half way point a leathery flavor had begun to creep in to the mix, but the others stayed consistent.
Unfortunately my camera battery died so I don't have anymore pics of the cigar progression, but the finish was good. Flavors continued with the vanilla, nuttiness, and leather with a spicy finish. Overall a good cigar, though I would have liked it much better if the draw hadn't been so tight. This has been my beef with all the lanceros I have smoked :dunno:. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong :scratchhe.
