  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Well, I think it depends on the EL. I don't think some of them are all too special. As for the Sublime, I must say I really think these are going to be special sticks. These sticks look like a work of Art. I really don't think they are going to get their legs for a couple years but until then I will enjoy just looking at them each time I open my humi. It is just a hunch, but I think by the time these hit their stride they will be a classic and their price will be out of site. Time will tell. You have to take a chance on these now and hope they pan out because if you wait and they are as good as I think they will be they will be budget crushers in a few years (they are pretty close to that now LOL).

There's been alot of scepticism about them and justly so at their pre-release price but WOW what an impressive looking and feeling stick. I also remember Aiz's comments from one of Cuba's finest rollers who said these are the best cigar coming out of Cuba in 20 years. That's quite a statement coming from one of the best master rollers in Cuba.

Just my two cents.

Sublimes... I have no idea as I've not had one yet...

EL's in general... Unfortunatly I have to say they are mostly Hype.

They are fun for a guy like me, they are waaayyy out of my price range so it's a blast when I get my hands on them as they turn into the "treasured" cigars, and I've been fortunate to have and give away a fair amount of them.

That being said...

I find that half of them are not nearly as good as many of my regular fav's which are all regular line rolled on the thighs of havana godesses cigars.

So... My 2 cents (which most likely are not worth 2 cents) say HYPE

Well I'll put my .02 in here...I'm looking at this a little different than some, and some of my thoughts on these cigars really has to come from the amount of what I can spend on cigars....I have enjoyed a lot of the EL's and there are some that just didn't float my boat...I think in 10 years some one with several boxes of the present El's will have some true gems...not to mention as a lot of folks have cried that these are not limited production, maybe not as limited as specially commisioned cigars but still 10 years from now I doubt you will find fresh production PSD # 3's...I really wonder what a # 2 Davidoff cost in 1990 ??...50 usd would be a somewhat fair price for these now..are they worth 50 bucks?? I think you can find a lot better cigar for 50 usd...but you can't buy a fresh box and put them away for 15 years, other cigars in the Davidoff line are much better an command a much higher price...I think you will see somewhat of the same thing with these EL's 10 to 15 years from now, because I beleive the embargo will end within this time and we all know that prices will rise on cuban cigars...will they all be great cigars in 10 to 15 years ??? some will, some won't...but someone will want the ones that you don't... so for now I will buy...just my .02....Bman

The only really outstanding els I've smoked have had a few years of age on them for me the Cohiba DC and partyD#1 els etc..are way to young to judge. I figure if I buy some boxes of els at todays price and hold on to them for 8-10 years you could sell a fiver or 2 and almost pay for the box. If you look and see what people ar charging for 10 years sticks it's 4 times what they are now.

For the most part (the Monte being the exception) - I really enjoy the ELs. Had a RyJ Robusto last evening - AWESOME !!!!! (and there's still 2 more un-opened boxes to look forward to.) The Cohiba DC EL will be a legendary cigar - it smokes beautifully already - and it is just a baby...... The PSD #3 and #2 also show some outstanding potential for the near future.

Are they "worth" the money? --- what cigar is "worth" the money?.... That's only the price you have to pay to experience the stick, it isn't a question of being "worth" it.. This thing of ours can't be brought down into a strictly financial evaluation (especially with something as subjective as taste) - I enjoy the flavor profile of most of the ELs I tried - to me the premium paid now seems like a good decision for me.....and hopefully will prove to be an outstanding one in the future...

WAHHHHHHH-2 more unopened boxes. These are my favs and I'm down to 6 left. I have my 2 fav vendors searching for more too. OK, my 2 cents now on EL's. A lot of the people saying that they are not worth the price or they would rather spend money on regular production. Howerver EL's are still very young and as a few have said, these may be some of the best around in 10 years. So as many of you have done, I have bitten the old Habano bullet and stored a few away. I only have one box of certain marquees but I might smack to old credit card for 2 Sublimes and one more DC EL, ouchie.

Do you view EL's as an everyday smoke or a special smoke?

For me, as a six or 8 times a yr special occasion smoke, they are worth it. Anything other than that wouldn't be. :smt102

I agree. Just an every once in awhile smoke. I don't like to say special occasion because it might just be a beautiful spring or summer night with a nice breeze and not a cloud in the sky and I want to cap off a nice evening with a really nice cigar. I don't wait for a ceremonial day to smoke an EL. Just when the mood hits me. I will be taking a few with me to Naples in March to smoke in the evening on the patio while overlooking the ocean. Now that's about as good a time as there gets in my book to break one out.

It may just be my taste buds, but I haven't been overwhelmed with the ELs. Several of them are good, even excellent cigars, but there are a lot of really great regular production cigars that are just as good or better, without the premium price. I know there is some prestige involved in having a limited production, but to me the end game is all about the flavor and enjoyment of the smoke.

If you're a collector with an eye towards aging for the purpose of reselling, then maybe the ELs are a good opportunity. But then again, Habanos makes not specific claims about limiting the productions, so you never know when they are going to release more of these, which could hurt long term investment prospects.

For me, cigars are for smoking and I simply don't have the patience or the space to age cigars beyond 3 or 4 years, and every cigar I buy is for my own personal enjoyment. If I was looking for an investment vehicle I would rather invest in stocks, Mutual Funds, real estate or treasuries.

LOL. A week on the beach is a special occasion. I was actually referring to a ceremonial date like an anniversary, graduation, etc. If the only time I smoked my El's was on beach vacations I'd have stock for quite some time.

Ya know the more I've been thinking about this EL hype thing...what I think is wrong is the hyped perseption is that with the aged leaf being used that these are ready to smoke out of the factory, and we all want to try them pronto....I really believe as I have been smoking more cigars with 3 to 6 years of age and the difference between them and the fresher cigars...I think most of the EL's will turn into really good cigars and some will truely be sublime...I think we just need to give these cigars age to be worth the price...just my .02 from Bman

Totally Agree!! I have some DC EL's right now that are not too special but I know they will turn the corner in the next six months to year and be something special.

Someone once said the EL's are like their own brand. I have to concur. So many are fabulous new, Monte Robusto, RyJ Robusto, Partagas SD3, and of course the Cohiba DC EL. Only a few of the EL's have been just OK out of the box, the Hoyo Particulars, Cohiba Pyramide and Monte C to name a few. Given some time even those might be fabulous.
Of the 25 boxes I'm aging, most are EL's.
