According to the Esteban Carreras website the Chupa Cabra is a Nicaraugan puro. It has a toothy Habano Oscuro wrapper that is both toothy and rustic with some veins and seams showing. This particular cigar is the Robusto measuring 5 X 54. As you can see the foot is closed and the head has a pigtail. This cigar was sent to me along with the Esteban Carreras Covenant on a cigar purchase I made several months ago.
The closed foot presented an opportunity to use the French method of toasting and then applying a straight cut. There was an initial shot of peppery spice. Some sweet leathery notes were present. The draw was wide open. I suspected that this may present problems later on in the smoke and of course it did. The strength and body was medium. All okay after a few puffs in.
Very soon I started channeling and despite continually rolling the cigar to different mouth positions, resting and correcting burn this just never went away. This cigar came from a humidor that is rock steady at 65% Rh.
Normally this small amount can be readily corrected and eliminated but not this time. The draw became very airy and required two relights. About this time I was getting frustrated. It's a shame because the flavors were actually pretty good. Sweet and leathery with a light core of spice.
So the frustration got the best of me and I ended the cigar. This was the only one of these sticks that I have but I have to believe that if the construction was better this would be a pretty good cigar. As it was a thrown in as an extra I am not out anything. Unfortunately though pretty good flavor was there I would not be tempted to buy this cigar. This may be an unfair assessment of this stick but it is all I have to go on.
I almost never put a cigar to rest at this point but alas frustration overcame any enjoyment and when it went out at this point that was enough for me.
