I've been a big fan of the Ashton VSG series. I love the bold peppery flavors and complexity. So I was anxious to try the ESG torpedo - to me, adding "estate" should automatically add superior quality.

Prelight draw was pleasant and woody with hints of sweetness. I thought, "This is a good sign!" Upon lighting, there was an awesome blast that lasted for several puffs. Unfortunately, that's probably the highlight of this cigar for anyone who loves bold flavors and spice.

Once the spice died down, the flavor did too. While remaining pleasant, the stick kept its slight coffee flavor in the background and it was pretty one-dimensional throughout. There were a few spice blasts toward the end, but nothing dramatic or interesting.

Basically, this is a pleasant enough smoke. But for a premium cigar, I feel like it should have a lot more complexity and power.

Final score: 85

I love the VSG, the ESG just doesn't do it for me either. The price is WAY to high, it is a good $6-8 stick but not worth 18-21. Anyway, nice review

I have a couple of these that were sent to me by Ctaylor. I have been letting them sit in my Humi because I want to try them on a special occation. They are just to much money per stick for me otherwise. Thanks for the review!!!

Great review. Never had a bad vsg out the box. The esg on the other hand needs extreme napping. Had a 20th OR and it had good coffee and spice thru out. It could still stand more down time...imho. I know for a super premium it should smoke great out the box, the components are there for a super cigar. I haven't given up hope yet.
