I'd never be able to point to just one single blend. I can give some favorites by category though ...

Favorites:

Straight Virginia ... McClelland 5100 or Astleys #109
Virginia / Burley blend ... MacBaren Navy Flake or GLP Barbary Coast
Virginia / Perique blend ... AC Peterson Navy Cut #499 or Stokkebye Navy Flake
Virginia / Latakia blend ... G&H Bob's Chocolate Flake or McClelland 25th Anniv
English blend ... Esoterica Pembroke or Rattray Highland Targe
Balkan blend ... GLP Bohemian Scandal or C&D Star of the East #066
Kitchen Sink blend ... Blatter & Blatter Reserve
Aromatic / flavored blend ... Bufflehead Cinnamon Teal or Stokkebye Nougat

Thanks to samplers and such i can chime in on some of these...

McClelland 5100
MacBaren Navy Flake
AC Peterson Navy Cut #499 or Stokkebye Navy Flake
G&H Bob's Chocolate Flake
Esoterica Pembroke
GLP Bohemian Scandal

I'd add Dunhill 965, Dunhill mild blend, and GLP Caravan, Stone Haven is bout the best flake i've had, and C&D DaVinci is great if you really like Latakia. Also good is Rattray's Red Rapparee, and Escudo.

One thing about flakes, some of them seem to bite no matter what... i'd recommend against them for newbie suggestions. But that said, i ran out of enough Stone Haven to fill a bowl with, so i took a bit of 5100 Virginia and made a maybe 50/50 split... that was nice! So if it bites, try mixing a little.

I have many more things to try, but its hard to crack a tin open. I'm trying to smoke whats already opened before i move on.

Being new to pipes, I have only tried a few but my favorite so far has been Mac Baren Virginia #1.
