  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Just curious if any of you have a favorite stock or one you are watching now... NOC and STOR have treated me well...

I'm not a financial guru, I make electricity for a living. Just thought I should add that info up front.

I follow the Warren Buffett strategy and invest in Blue Chip companies that pay above average dividends (think Cocoa Cola, proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson) and set up my accounts to be DRIPs (Dividend Reinvestment Plan). It's a set it and forget it approach and over time it's really been working. My favorite high-dividend payers are Healthcare REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts). They operate as tax-free companies and are therefore required to distribute 90% of their profits back to shareholders in the form of dividends. My 2 favorites are HCP and SBRA. The stock price may fluctuate but every quarter I get a nice chunk of change which I use to buy more stock automatically.

I have always held apple since getting into the market back in 08-09. It's getting beat on right now but I've always and will always hold apple.

Outside of that I prefer a set it and forget it approach so I invest most heavily in mutual funds.

I missed out on Apple's rise. While I haven't held Boeing, I did have a company that refurbishes planes. I will have to look them up, can't recall their name at the moment.
As for the Healthcare REIT, I didn't realize the benefits in that arena. STOR is a REIT but not a Healthcare one. I'll definitely be exploring that arena!

I would echo @Xavier Dredo , investing in Blue Chip companies that have above average dividends ( Apple, Exxon Mobile, Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, Mattel, etc.) The best advice is not necessarily which quality stock you pick but that you are actually saving/investing at least 15% of each dollar you earn, period. Your savings rate is going to have the biggest impact on retiring comfortably in your golden years.
Good luck!

While sort of a stock tip and sort of not a stock, having gold/silver in metal form will help in the long and short term of things. As far as holding stocks go, I've got RDS:A (Royal Dutch Shell), AT&T, PFE (Pfizer), CVX (Chevron), MBWM (Mercantile Bank Corp). All have performed rather well and each has a dividend, albeit not as much as I'd like but they range from 6% to 2%. It's a hard thing to get right and you will lose money in the start but overtime (read: years) it will get better. Definitely better to have money in something and try make something out of it, even if it's just $10 or $100 or more from a large investment.
