  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

THE FEDOR-STRIKEFORCE DEAL; UFC COMMENTS (UPDATED)
Monday, August 03, 2009 - by Steven Marrocco - MMAWeekly.com

Joost Raimond, Chief Operating Officer for M-1 Global, said the deal to sign Fedor Emelianenko to Strikeforce was completed Monday morning, just before a press release was sent to media outlets. Details of the agreement were finalized in recent days.

Emelianenko, the top-ranked heavyweight fighter in the world, will make his debut for the San Jose, Calif., based promotion sometime in the fall, his first time fighting inside a cage. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz told MMAWeekly.com that Emelianenko is contracted for three fights.

The news came as an abrupt about-face to earlier reports that Emelianenko and his team were in the process of fielding offers from multiple promotions, including a lucrative proposal from the UFC, which clamored for the Russian’s services last week.

UFC president Dana White had just landed in the United Arab Emirates for the 2009 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Championships when he heard the news.

"Fedor is a fucking joke, he turns down a huge deal and the opportunity to face the best in the world to fight nobodies for no money!" White commented to MMAWeekly.com via email through a UFC representative.

"I feel sorry for the real fight fans. I wanted to make the deal, but it takes two and it is VERY obvious Fedor doesn't want to fight the best, and doesn't give a fuck about the fans," added the brash UFC executive.

Raimond said Strikeforce met M-1 Global’s chief demand to co-promote events which Emelianenko fought on.

“It was a good opportunity,” said Raimond. “(The co-promotion) is a substantial part. The whole set-up for the deal is to have co-promotion partners, and of course, Fedor is an important part of that construction. But the co-promotion deal is of great importance.”

Raimond declined to say whether the financial side of Emelianenko’s deal with Strikeforce was comparable or better to other offers.

“All the assumptions flying around about the offer are assumptions made by various people, and are quite unsubstantiated,” he said. “The financials behind his deal are based on a large number of factors, which include the co-promotion and co-branding activities, and Fedor is a part of that total deal.”

When asked whether Emelianenko would fight on CBS this fall, Raimond said, “It would seem that way, yes.”

However, he amended his statement shortly after.

“The timing for that cannot be confirmed,” he continued. “But of course, because of the broadcasting deals Strikeforce has, these things all become very possible.”

Kelly Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President for CBS Primetime TV, said he “wouldn’t rule out” a Strikeforce show on CBS late this year. He said his network had no direct hand in the Emelianenko deal, but stood to gain from it with options the network held to broadcast Strikeforce events.

“This was, quite frankly, a straight Strikeforce deal,” he said. “I don’t believe anything was represented on the part of CBS. Strikeforce and, I would assume, Showtime, get all the credit.”

In the press release issued Monday morning, Strikeforce stated Emelianenko’s first fight would be broadcast on Showtime. Afromowitz said a press conference announcing details on the new relationship was forthcoming.

Raimond said the new deal included plans to co-promote shows with Strikeforce overseas in Europe, where M-1 has conducted most of its shows. He said other M-1 fighters were Strikeforce bound as well, but did not name any names.

“We have a much more international view on the entire business, and Strikeforce is very U.S. domestic oriented, and we have always been much more internationally minded.”

Emelianenko, who returned to Russia Wednesday following a press conference in Anaheim, Calif., said he was happy to have a home again.

“I am looking forward to going back to work and fighting at the highest level,” he said.

This is a good deal for Strikeforce they're like the little leagues and need all the exposure they can get. M-1 will help with that in Europe though given their and M-1's combined rosters there aren't many exciting fights they can put Fedor in. Probably the only fight worth watching would be if they can get Overeem to fight him other than that Brett Rogers would be a waste of time.. Bob Sapp? nevermind. Paul Buentello is now with the UFC, Fabricio Werdum's probably seen better days so really who's left? They can probably coax Barnett to fight him but then they'd have the licensing issue so really after one fight Strikeforce and M-1 will be scratching their heads and coming up with cannon fodder to feed him.. great thinking guys! So much for fighting at the highest levels.

In a recent interview Fedor stated he has three fights left on him M-1 contract and interestingly his deal with Strikeforce will run for three fights so after one exciting fight and two smashing will we see Dana dealing with Fedor again?

I agree with you, lol to the Bob Sapp comment! I understand that these guys are all in it for the money but it doesn't make sense to me to join a sub-par organization who will pay Fedor less than the UFC offered but pay M-1 the co-promotion portion of the fight's proceeds. I think it's a pissing contest but to be honest, I'm losing respect for Fedor through this whole thing. I mean that last deal that White threw on the table for Fedor (all the M-1 logos he wanted and the massive contract, etc.) was rediculous. It had everything but the co-promotion. Even though it didn't offer the co-promotion it did offer branding and logo placement wherever M-1 wanted on the cage and on Fedor. I think everybody will be extremely disappointed and continue to be so until he fights somebody in the UFC, not somebody who used to be in the UFC but didn't make it or is out of their prime again. I think it's a crock and that's too bad because Fedor is a great fighter but too bad he's just a puppet for M-1.

But it's not just the "co-promotion", It's my understanding that Fedor is also part owner of M-1.

I don't get what type of equity stake Fedor has in M-1 and if so why does he have a two year 6 fight contract with them.. can't wait for that contract to end hopefully he won't get knocked out in the mean time.

I'm starting to believe Fedor cares more about the M-1 promotion than fighting. Huge coup for strikeforce but what happens if Fedor loses in strikeforce, bye bye UFC money. the strangest thing is that we never hear Fedor speak on the issue just his manager and partner. Does he have something on/over Fedor? something just doesn't smell right.

Strikeforce is a joke, but I know money is important as well. I would have signed with the better deal as well. Oh well, so much for wishing to see Fedor in the UFC.

It looks like Fedor is dodging fights with the UFC. The only person who has any chance of beating Fedor is the Big UFC duck.

Man I love Brock he's a fn' gym rat... I want to hear some one ask him about Fedor and him replying "Fedor who? who's Fedor?" can't believe he'd never heard of Kimbo either.

Like you guys I think Fedor is dodging the real fighters too. Lessner would crush him, so this is the best way for him to keep his legacy is to stay in strike force.

Ok so, My friend thinks that it is M-1 and the russian mob that are not letting him sign with UFC. They want to co-premote or no deal. Being from Chicago I beleive this is more probable then him dodging Brock.

that's a really strong viewpoint. wouldn't be at all surprised that something like that is blocking this to happen.

People make jokes about the Russian Mafia, but they are for real, and possible more dangerous than our American versions.

But back on subject Fedor is a joke, he takes less money for what, the chance to grow a company that has no shot of taking a bigger part of the market than they already have?
