So I decided that I should try to contribute to this wonderful website a bit and shoot my first cigar review out there. Today I had a little time to myself so I fished through the ol' humi and pulled out my first ever Fuente Work of Art Maduro. I picked it up at a new (to me) B&M in Santa Rosa about a week ago. Here goes.
Upon first inspection it is a beautiful figurado. The wrapper is flawless and very dark with a few light spots here and there. It has some substantial weight to it and there are no soft spots.
Without hesitation I nipped the tip and lit it up. The nipple at the end of the figurado makes it very easy to get a good burn going. My first impressions were of cooking grade dark chocolate bittersweet and lovely. I heated it up and continued on into the first third.
First Third
The bittersweet chocolate taste gave way to a sweeter chocolate, maybe a mocha taste to start out. The aroma of the smoke is fantastic, almost floral. As I move on tastes of leather and cinnamon take over and the chocolate hits the background. At the end of the first third sweet cedar comes into play and possibly a faint taste of black licorice.
Second Third
As I moved on to the second third, the leather picks up considerably and the dark chocolate leaves. The sweetness and cinnamon are definitely there. As the third progresses, sweet cedar takes over and becomes the dominant force along with some tasty pepper. I notice that I'm getting a nice little nicotine buzz for a small smoke.
Third Third
As the second third draws to a close the leathery tone picks back up and comes to the foreground. The sweetness increases quite a bit and the dark chocolate makes a triumphant return. This continues on until the last five or six puffs where all the other flavors exit and the smoke is dominated by cinnamon and pepper.
Overall this was a GREAT smoke and moves up to the top five or 10 smokes for me. The burn and draw were great. It was a little windy outside but the cigar never needed any touch ups or relights. It never had any chemical taste to it as I've found with some maduros. I would recommend it to anyone. It never got hot or bitter and final smoking time was 1 hour.
