  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Conditions: smoked 1/1/12, with water, in a cold quiet basement, soundtrack was selections from Ministry's "Land of Rape and Honey" and Dresden Dolls' "No, Virginia...", no touch ups, and burn time of ~1 hour 50.

Second on the hit list is a lump of a toro. Dark brown and veiny in a promising way, with visible seams that are not too worrisome, and a sloppy triple cap that is slightly, the contender weighs in at 6x50, or possibly slightly less in the ring gauge. A good tooth to the wrapper and some patchy oiliness round out the picture as one of a fighter: not great to look at, but with character and backbone. There was minimal prelight aroma, and the cold draw showed clay and leather.

An initial nasal assault of spice screams Nicaraguan as the first bell goes off. Initial impressions of warmed cinnamon and peat slowly give to a solid tobacco core. While rock solid initially, the draw is superb. I pick up a slight toffee note into the end of the first third.

At the midway point I get an ammonial-berry twang, and a floral sensation in the sinus/ back palate range, a classic sign for me that a Nicaraguan cigar is trying to kill me. The burn is absolutely perfect, and I look forward to losing this fight.

Wood, spice, then leather, spice, earth, and spice, I keep getting these strobing reoccurrences. This is complexity not of range, but of layering. And the volume slider keeps going up. It really reminds me of certain techno music genres done really well, and I am starting to feel slightly tranced out to go with it.

As expected, I had problems with the cap at about 1 1/2", but was not about to let it slow me down. I actually peeled it with my teeth and gave it a thoughtful chew: the cap was thick as all get out, dense yet flavorful. Explains why they couldn't hide the seams.

In the end, I concede the victory to the contender. While it. couldn't lay me out in power, it gets the TKO for it's development, down to the nub performance, and the fact that I cannot, with certainty, name it. Construction, profile, and my own emotional response tells me Garcia made, possibly from Havana Cellars, but I am not certain.

Going to name my opponent as the Tat 7th Reserva, possibly out of a VERY ugly batch, but who, ever, it was a great fight worth revisiting.

I would give you credit for guessing the manufacturer...
