particulars: smoked 12/28/11, paired with water and anxiety, no touch ups, thankfully, total burn 1:55, and soundtrack of Daft Punk, "Homework"
The third smoke in Flushy's blind was the first I smoked, due to it's curb appeal to me. It was the largest selection at 6x52, and sported a gorgeous dark cocoa brown wrapper with some slight veins and a simple but elegant cap. And some cracks.
This is where the anxiety came in. There were two cracks in the wrapper, one in the center and one right before the cap, running along the length. I had NO issues with any of Fourtotheflush's other selections, and I know the manufacturer who (I think) made this rocks some outstanding quality control. Even though this smoke had rested in my most stable box for 8 days, I will say with 95% certainty that this was all me.
It did make me anxious, too, as this cigar called to me. Prelight aromas of spice and light sweetness, and a prelight draw of hershey's and peat, we're making me hope for a chocolaty asskicker. First light gave a creamy texture with fresh bread dough, peppercorns, and a wee bit of ginger. And TONS of smoke. The volume of smoke cannot be stressed enough: eagle scouts of smoking age could use this thing to signal for help! I watched the oils seem to bubble up from the burn line, as a minerality, like limestone aquifer water, changed things into sourdough and almonds, with a slight reappearance of spice. Watching the smoke snake it's way up the cigar continually, I got a retro hale impression of dried fruits, raisin but more prune.
At this point I have a split. Full on 1" split at the midway, exposed wrapper and all, and IT KEEPS SMOKING. The draw was perfect, the favors present, and the burn was better than it has any right to be. This cigar would have been outstanding with a cafe con leche, with the balance of bitter and sweet, the creamy texture, and the power just forward enough to be noticeable. Past the half way point, and working through the split, the bready baked vibe was still full and the spice waned, and it had more of a rich and velvety texture. This is a cigar for fat kids, and I should know!
Having moved past the split, the power had peaked at the lower range of full, and the burn went from 85% to full on perfect again ( I stress, NO touch ups here). I started to get a slight dryness on the palate, but it was not my first of the day, so I was good with that. I really got no significant changes, but more a deepening of the prior and existent profiles, which was fine by me. Some big meals do not need a dessert, but rather just time to reflect on all the good shit you just enjoyed! I got a slight but noticeable spice at the very end, when despite the crack near the cap, I was still able to take this down to the finger dance.
I have had these flavors before. I have had this smoke signal evening before. I have even had the wrapper issue, and then miraculous cinderella-story burn before (that one I dropped, oops). I am calling this one Undercrown, a cigar made by fat kids for fat kids, and my favorite regular production release of 2011. If it is not, I owe Mr. Drew a bottle of bourbon!
Once again, many thanks to Fourtotheflush. This was difficult, but immense fun, and I thank him for sponsoring, as well as sending three rocking selections!
