I have always been fascinated with barber pole cigars and have started to stockpile a few in the humi including a number from the Corona Cigar company. What are your thoughts on barber poles, good smokes or too gimmicky? If you like them which ones would you recommend?

I always smoke a Cao America on the 4th of July, but the stripe is so small I'm sure there is no difference. I think most makers are simply doing it for style, rather than flavor changes.

There are a few sticks that have a different wrappers half way up through.

IMHO, totally gimmicky. I never had one that I thought was better than 'same' cigar made solely with one of the barber wrappers. I once thought I could sense some blending or transition because of the different wrappers. But, after a couple more of the same cigar, I realized it was entirely in my head.

Some do look cool, though.

As Dave already knows, I'm a cheap arse, so I'm not smoking Fuente Between the Lines, and such. I do like the cheapie La Herencia Dos Capas. I little milder, richer and smoother then the LH Oscuro Fuerte.

I don't know if they still make them, but Taboo had a solid barber pole cigar. I did a review of it here: http://www.botl.org/community/forum...Taboo-Barber-Pole-Toro?highlight=taboo+barber
Yea, looking through some older humidor tour photos this cigar was in just about every box I saw. As I understand it, and someone correct me if I am wrong, they shut down their mail order operation and now just have a cigar bar/lounge. Would love to try one if anyone can get their hands on one.

Definitely just a novelty. Unlike candela wrappers, I've never been able to discern a meaningful difference in taste between BTL and comparable Fuentes with other wrappers.

I don't know. Maybe all for not but I do like the looks and if you stick two cigars in front of me and one is a barber and one is not. I am probably gonna pick the barber pole.

They're gimmicky, to be sure, but there can be definite flavor shifts. I smoked a camo cigar once, had habano, maduro, and candela wrapper pieced together all over it. Wasn't a very good cigar, but you could really taste the candella showing up and leaving at times.

Personally, I don't care much for the barberpoles. If I want a light shade, I want a light shade. If I want a dark, I'll grab a dark. I'm usually in the mood for one or the other.

I made enough purchases at my local B&M to receive a free stick. And the Asylum 13 Ogre's barber pole wrapper grabbed my attention. Not only is the size remarkable, 7x70, but I'm a sucker for candelas. I can't wait for the right time to smoke it, because I'm curious as to how much a candela barber pole might influence the flavor.
