The first of three blind reviews of cigars generously provided by Fourtotheflush.
I have to admit right up front, I was a little distracted during most of this review because about ten minutes after lighting up, my daughter backed into her mother's car and I spent most of the time I was smoking this on the phone making insurance claims. I still think I can hit the high points.
Cigar "A" is a 5" x 46 or 44 with a pig-tail cap. Additionally, the foot has some extra wrapper length that is folded over. It's a medium brown, mottled with some darker patches. Though firm, it doesn't feel particularly heavy. Very little aroma sniffing it right out the humidor.
Normally, I punch my cigars, but due to the relatively small ring gauge and the pig tail, I straight cut it with a my Xikar X8. The cold draw is pure tobacco. In fact, I can't think of any other cigar I had where I wold describe the flavor so overwhelmingly one taste: Tobacco. Draw is easy but not loose.
Once the foot is toasted and glowing nicely I take my first puff. Wow! Pepper!. Maybe not the strongest pepper I've every had, but definitely the most overwhelming sensation. Burns like heck on the retrohale. The first inch is definitely dominated by pepper. Good volume of smoke, and a pretty white ash is being produced.
After the first ash falls off the taste starts to mellow out a little bit. The pepper moves into the background and the cigar picks up strong wood notes with more subtle earth notes. This flavor profile remains pretty consistent throughout the cigar. Burn is pretty good, but not perfect. I had baby sat it a bit to keep the burn line even. Nothing major, certainly didn't detract from the cigar significantly, just an item of note.
Shortly after the photo above was taken, the darn thing went out on me. I don't think I let it sit for too long, but as I mentioned, I was distracted a little, so I might have. It lit right back up though and in the last inch or inch and a half the flavor started to give off some cocoa and nut notes which was a lovely finish.
I'm not sure what it was, though I'm relatively certain I've never had one before. I'm looking forward to the next two! Thank you Fourtotheflush.
