I recently watched the 1931 movie "M", directed by Fritz Lang. I thought it was excellent.
When I watch an old movie, I tend to pay attention to the glimpses we get of "what life was like" back then...in this case, what life was like in a German city in the early 30's. So I pay attention to scenes where people are eating, or going to a cafe, or...smoking cigars.
There were a few scenes involving a group of men sitting around talking while they smoked. I had the impression that the director was going out of his way to show the most colorful collection of cigar-smoking styles imaginable.
Everyone smoked a different vitola.
Everyone held his cigar in a different way.
There were a variety of unusual cigar holders.
And...one guy actually was smoking a pipe with a cigar sticking out if it!
It was surreal!
(Oh, and by the way....Peter Lorre's performance was magnificent.)
