  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

FTTF BLIND CIGAR B

5 5/8x46

So this cigar is apparently one of two different cigars sent out to the group of reviewers as cigar B. It is a classic corona gorda vitola, at 5 5/8x46, which is one of my absolute favorite sizes, as I think you get a great balance between length and ring gauge with this size. This particular cigar has an attractive, slightly reddish brown wrapper, with a few visible veins, and a fine amount of tooth to it. The construction looks great, with a little damage at the foot, but otherwise flawless... tight seams, triple cap, good bunching, etc. The cold aroma is of hay, peanut butter, and a little spicy red pepper. The cold draw is a touch loose, and offers a flavor combination that I am 110% certain is Pepin. It is a combination of sweet peanut, and hot spicy pepper that I have come to identify heavily with cigars made by My Father/DPG, which goes right along with what my first guess as to what this cigar is. In fact, I believe (though I may be wrong) it was Danthebugman who I first saw refer to this profile as "Pepinutbutter", which is pretty much perfect.

Lit at 4:45pm, on a nippy, fuck that, ice cold afternoon.

Right away the flavor profile is bangin'. Smoke production is awesome, and delivers a bitter coffee and toasted nut on the draw, with an oily, spicy pepper laden finish that lasts for a good minute across the tongue, moving quickly from the front to the back, before settling to burn out slowly in the back of the throat. Body isn't overwhelming, but is certainly up around medium full even within the first inch or so. Through the nose this bitch is alllll spice.

Ash is bright white in color, and a little loose and flakey. Not a big deal though, rolled it safely into the ashtray without making a mess at about the 1.5 inch mark for the first time. Draw has actually firmed up a little bit, in a good way, as before lighting it was a little too loose for my preference. Flavor profile has gotten kind of darker and oilier. The spice has toned down a bit, and now it basically reminds me of a thick, bitter black coffee, with a pretty gentle black pepper that slowly burns through on the finish, where it was rather intense early on.

In the final third unfortunately I got a little tar, which made everything taste like... tar for a few draws. Took another cut off the top, and that cleaned everything up. In fact, it made the flavor profile, which had been getting increasingly grubby, and earthy, and dirty, take on a lot of complexity (a little dark chocolate, toasted nuts came back, coffee became much more defined, and sharp), and the peppery spice became a big player again on the finish, going from slow and low, to pretty intense, and pungent. Smoke production never has been anything less than stunning, and the body stays pretty consistently medium full. By the end I did feel a little nicotine, but certainly not anything overwhelming.

Performance from a technical standpoint, when I ended at 5:59pm was great from start to finish requiring no touch ups. Ash held consistently between an inch and 1.5 inches the whole way, despite being delicate and flakey, never once falling unprovoked (on me). Definitely a great, maybe somewhat straight forward, rustic profile. My guess is that this is a Tatuaje Havana VI Hermosos. I'm not as positive on this as the previous cigar, but given the vitola, the wrapper, the flavor profile, and the construction... that's my best guess.

Thanks to Flush!!

Very close this is a My Father Cedro Deluxe!
Damn! This is why it's fun. So close, but so far. Thanks so much for this opportunity Flush.
I've never had one before... I'm going to smoke one tomorrow.

Doc... I really enjoy everyone's review write-ups, so thank you for participating. Here's a suggestion --don't drink a Mojito before or during your write-up, while relaxing at Casa Fuente. Oh wait, I'm about someone else... never-mind. :headroll:

I smoked this stick a few days ago…. A great stick to put in a blind cigar review. I’m not sure I would have been able to guess this stick. The construction reminds me of what a Pepin factory would produce. That’s all that I could go by if I was given this cigar since I have never smoked this size before…

First third – got some woody with a touch of citrus and nuttiness. There is also a good amount of spice. About ½” getting some bitter coffee finish and a slight sweetness with primarily a woody flavor.

Second third – now getting mostly a bitter coffee with a slight sweetness flavor and the woody flavor isn’t as prominent.

Final third – this part is just great. There is a mix of coffee, nutty, and even a touch of dark cocoa flavors.

I personally think this stick needs to age. I’m getting extreme dryness to the finish or a mouthfeel sensation. Thoughts on aging?
