  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I attended a great event at Signature Cigars in Washington, DC. Keith K. Park, Founder and CEO of Prometheus and God of Fire, visited Signature Cigars to meet cigar aficionados and discuss his companies’ products. While I enjoyed a wonderful chat with Keith, I had a pleasure of smoking God of Fire by Carlito, Piramide 2007.

Keith shared the story of Prometheus and God of Fire, and answered our questions with great patience. We talked about his collaboration with Carlos Fuente, Jr. to create a new line of super-premium cigars. Creating a cigar brand that centers on the Greek mythology of Prometheus was a brilliant idea from my point of view. By doing so, the company connects God of Fire, its cigar brand, with Prometheus, its accessory brand.

In my humble opinion, God of Fire is a great success story. In many industries, including the cigar business, some manufacturers put some huge efforts into marketing and create a “marketing bubble” for their mediocre products. As soon as their products hit the market, consumers instantly realize the misalignment between the marketing efforts and the product quality. This is one of the major causes of failure in the cigar business. Obviously, cigar aficionados are a sensitive crowd and instantly reject inferior products even if the marketing is good.

On the other hand, some companies offer good products but lack the marketing skills necessary to grow their business. What makes Prometheus and God of Fire stand out is that they possess great marketing skills backed by a range of superior products. Keith’s numerous personal visits to cigar stores every year shows his dedication to customer satisfaction. For many companies, it is more than enough to send marketing representatives into the field. But it is not common to see a CEO like Keith talking to his customers in person!

God of Fire has two blends: Carlito and Don Carlos. Carlito comes in four different vitolas (Double Robusto, Piramide, Churchill and Double Corona), while Don Carlos comes in three (Robusto, Robusto Gordo and Toro). Today, I will review God of Fire Piramide 2007, which is a Carlito blend.

Origin: Dominican Republic
Vitola: Piramide (52 x 6 3/8)
Wrapper: Cameroon
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic

Construction & Appearance

God of Fire by Carlito, Piramide 2007 has a beautiful band that resembles fine art. This cigar has actually two bands. The bigger band, closer to the cap, pictures Prometheus tied to a rock and pecked by an eagle. The lower band reads 2007 (the year the cigar was rolled) and the blend name, which is Carlito in this case.

GOF Piramide 2007 has a nice, shiny Cameroon wrapper. The build is almost flawless, as expected from a super-premium cigar. The cigar is very slightly toothy, which is a common quality of Cameroon wrappers. I like toothy cigars as they promise more flavor and they are more oily. The only problem I saw with the construction is that the cap unraveled just a little bit after I cut it with the guillotine cutter, even though the cut was not deep at all (around a quarter inch). On the other hand, unraveling was not a major problem and the cigar lasted about 90 minutes without any problems.

Draw was perfect in this cigar. Not so tight and not so loose. Just perfect. Burn was flawless and razor sharp. I never had to correct the burn with my torch lighter. This cigar produces white and thick smoke. Ash is kind of grayish and holds well to the cigar.

Flavor
Aged for three years, God of Fire by Carlito Piramide 2007 is a medium-bodied cigar. During the first five to six minutes of smoking, the cigar exhibited peppery and spicy notes. However, the pepper and spice were muted completely after five minutes and never came back through my 90-minute smoking experience. God of Fire Piramide 2007 is a creamy-tasting cigar with some sweet notes typical of Cameroon wrappers. Leather and sweet cedar notes were dominant until the end of the first half of the cigar. By the time I reached the second half, I started picking up some herbal and floral notes along with the leather and sweet cedar. All these flavors were well-balanced through the entire smoking experience. In terms of the flavor, this cigar is not so much complicated, but the existing flavors are smooth, balanced and consistent. God of Fire by Carlito Piramide 2007 is not a long finish cigar for sure. I’d rather call it a clean finish cigar, as expected from a medium-bodied stick.

Overall
Before buying God of Fire by Carlito Piramide 2007, I was wondering if this cigar is as good as it was advertised or if it is just a well-marketed yet mediocre product. But after I smoked it, I decided that God of Fire by Carlito Piramide 2007 is worth every penny. Obviously, many of us cannot afford to smoke this super-premium masterpiece on a regular basis. But if you ask me if I would buy it again, my answer would be “Yes !” without any hesitation.
