  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Frustrating is, this game will be (A yoda for Dave  ) If I can ever get my swing lined up to where the golf ball doesn't automatically go right, then I might be decent :hysterica I've been getting better, little by little.

I hear ya Cliff. I started to play seriously this year and it is damn tough.

I seem to have that slight right problem with my drive.

I have no problem driving/hitting the ball 200+ yards, but the problem is the diagonal line it takes  I'll have to get out on the driving range and experiment more with my stance and swing. Good thing a driving range is only about 5 min. from my house

Yea, the range really helps. My drive needs work. My iron play is pretty good. Suprisingly, I am actually very good at putting.

I've been playing for a few years and have a decent swing. It's just these damn golf balls I've been buying ... they all seem to be magnetically attracted to trees, sand and water.

Is it a push or a slice Cliff? A push is a lot easier to fix. I used to be a slicer, with every club but the shortest irons. I am now a hooker :disappoin :nono:

Hah...I'm not sure what it's called. I'm right handed and the ball normally goes to the right. I believe that's a slice :dunno:

Takes time. Do yourself a favor and get some lessons. The game is even harder to play if you have to unlearn bad habits.

If the ball goes right off the club, but the ball path doesn't curve, that'd be a push. If the ball goes straight down your target line and curves right, that'd be a slice, or a fade if only a mild curve. Lessons rock! Think "inside-out" while at the range.

Slicer! That's me too Cliff. One piece of advice. Go find LESSONS! They really aren't that expensive. The ones I took probably cost me about a good round of golf each lesson price-wise. And trust me, it can help TREMENDOUSLY. No need to take a ton of them, even one can help, though I'd recommend aroudn 3.

Wish I could get my ass back out onto the course, I love the game, jost don't have the money/time for it.

LESSONS! and stop trying to compensate for the slice by aiming left, that only adds to the problem...but get some lessons and it's not that hard a problem to fix...

I take three lessons every year when the golf season starts.

This seems to straighten out the kinks for a while. Then about 1/2 through the season I take another 3 lessons.

It is easier when someone else is looking at your swing and motions, they can pin point the errors quickly and straighten you out faster so you are paring and hitting straighter out there.

Then there is always the old word FORE !! FORE I SAID !!! FORE !!!

Some advice,

1) take lessons, they're worth it
2) buy one book, Ben Hogan Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf
3) ignore ALL amateur advice (see #1)

and most of all remember rule #35

Great advice here. I taught myself to play late in life because I did not have the time or willingness to take lessons. Well, I can shoot pretty consistently in the mid to high 80's on courses up to 6,500 yards, but I will never get any better. My stance sucks, my form sucks and my swing sucks. I learned to play with my poor form and do pretty well with it - enough to really enjoy the game. However, if I had to do it over, I would definitely take lessons.

One thing I would stress for beginners; learn to drive the ball straight. If you are in play all the time your scores will improve dramatically. One thing I can do well is drive the ball straight. It keeps me in play and allows me to score reasonably well if my irons and short game are "on".
